OER – INCLUDE

0.0 stars

This coursebook has been developed in the scope of the Erasmus+ KA2 project INCLUDE (Intercultural Communication and Linguistic Upgrade in a Digital Environment). The project was set in the context of the global onset of the COVID-19 pandemic that has brought immense changes to the manner people communicate and engage in professional activities. Language and intercultural communication (LIC) teachers at higher education institutions teach courses that heavily depend on communication and they have had to invest more time and effort into transforming their teaching methods and materials into ones that are applicable in online teaching. At the same time, LIC teachers are the ones who have to prepare their students for real-life communication in a virtual setting as well as to enable them to acquire the Global Competence.

The main objective of the INCLUDE project was to boost students' employability on a global scale by ensuring an inclusive, progressive, high-quality language and communication course in a range of languages (English, Croatian, Portuguese, Greek) at higher education institutions across Europe and wider.

OER Student Advocate Toolkit
Unrestricted Use
CC BY
Rating
0.0 stars

This toolkit was created by OER student leaders in the CCC and CSU systems. The toolkit's purpose is to motivate students to get involved in OER advocacy and the Open Education movement, as well as make it known that students can make a difference in their education. Education costs can be cut to a fraction of the price with OER, which would allow for more students to be able to access knowledge and higher education. While this toolkit contains some examples and suggestions specific to California institutions, it can still be helpful for all college students. Thanks to the Michelson 20MM Foundation's financial support students were paid for their work and contributions in creating this document, as well as presenting at conferences.

Echoes of Ecological Wars

Short Description:
The essays here contribute to developing and deepening an understanding of the ecological challenges ravaging Nigeria, Africa and our world today. They illustrate the global nature of these terrors. These essays are not meant just to enable for coffee table chatter: they are intended as calls to action, as a means of encouraging others facing similar threats to share their experiences.

Long Description:
Set out in seven sections, this book of 54 essays deals with deep ecological changes taking place primarily in Nigeria but with clear linkages to changes elsewhere in the world. The essays are laid out with an undergird of concerns that characterise the author’s approach to human rights and environmental justice advocacy. The first section rightly presents broad spectrum ecological wars manifesting through disappearing trees, spreading desertification, floods, gas flaring and false climate solutions.

The second section zeroes in on the different types of violence that pervade the oil fields of the Niger Delta and draws out the divisive power of crude oil by holding up Sudan as a country divided by oil and which has created a myriad of fissures in Nigeria. The exploitation of crude oil sucks not just the crude, it also sucks the dignity of workers that must work at the most polluting fronts.

Section three underscores the need for strict regulation of the fossil fuels sector and shows that voluntary transparency templates adopted by transnational oil companies are mere foils to fool the gullible and are exercises in futility as the profit driven corporations would do anything to ensure that their balance sheets please their top guns and shareholders. The fourth section builds up with examples of gross environmental misbehaviours that leave sorrow and blood in a diversity of communities ranging from Chile to Brazil and the United States of America.

Section five of the book is like a wedge in between layers of ecological disasters and extractive opacity. It takes a look at the socio-political malaise of Nigeria, closing with an acerbic look at crude-propelled despotism and philanthropic tokens erected as payment for indulgence or as some sort of pollution offsets.

The closing sections provide excellent analyses of the gaps and contortions in the regulatory regimes in Nigeria. It would be surprising if these were not met with resistance on the ground.

These essays provide insights into the background to the horrific ecological manifestations that dot the Nigerian environment and the ecological cancers spreading in the world. They underscore the fact there are no one-issue struggles. Working in a context where analyses of ecological matters is not the norm, decades of consistent environmental activism has placed the writer in good stead to unlock the webs that promote these scandalous realities.

We are faced with the need to make decisions, both big and small, on a daily basis. The earlier young people learn how to make a good decision, the better their decision-making skills will be. In this short course in our Ella's Adventures series, your students will read and listen to a story about Ella, who has decisions to make. While most of her decisions are easy, she runs across a hard one and employs a decision-making tool to help solve her problem.

Open History of Psychology: The Lives and Contributions of Marginalized Psychology Pioneers
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted

Short Description:
This is an open educational resource (OER) co-created by students in undergraduate History and Systems of Psychology courses. Each chapter focuses on the life and contributions of a marginalized pioneering psychologist. [Image Attribution: Penn State Special Collection, https://goo.gl/WP7Dgc, CC BY-NC-SA 2.0, https://goo.gl/Toc0ZF]

Long Description:
Understanding the history of a discipline requires looking at prominent figures and events that contributed to the growth of the discipline. Yet historical accounts are prone to including what those writing the accounts believe is most important to know. Within the discipline of psychology, women and people of color are noticeably absent from historical accounts, particularly those in traditional textbooks (Cramblet Alvarez et al., 2020).

This collection of chapters features the lives and contributions of pioneering women and psychologists of color–including their general biographies, important achievements, the historical context surrounding their work, and the historical impact their work has left on the field of psychology.

Each chapter was written by students in sections of History and Systems of Psychology courses at the University of North Dakota and the University of Nevada Reno, under the direction of their course instructors, Dr. Alison Kelly (UND) and Dr. Brittany Avila (UNR). Students worked in teams through multiple drafts of their chapters throughout the semester and were able to choose to publish their work as part of this compilation.
