This training manual has been developed to guide Teacher Trainers/etutors in training teachers to integrate ICT tools in their teaching and learning process. The design of manual is aligned to the National Curriculum which outlines the learning objectives for example, knowledge and understanding, skills and attitudes the teachers need to be equipped with in preparation for integrating ICTs in schools. The training manual is arranged into sessions and each session has a topic, session objectives, content, and activities. For example, in the introduction, the manual contains the resources, methodologies, and assessment. There are references such as open education resources which are free and other links that the master trainers can refer to for additional information.

The in-service teacher training programme was developed and adapted to UNESCO ICT Competency Framework for Teachers (CFT Version 3) and built by adapting and supplementing existing Open Educational Resources (OER). UNESCO ICT CFT consists of 18 competencies organized according to the six aspects of teachers’ professional practice, over three levels of teachers’ pedagogical use of ICT. The underlying idea is that teachers who have competencies to use ICT in their professional practice will deliver quality education and ultimately be able to effectively guide the development of students’ ICT competencies. Rwanda in-service teacher training programme focuses on competencies to integrate the appropriate ICT tools in a classroom setting and bring new experiences to Rwandan schools so that students and teachers have more exposure to an environment that grants them access to more valuable information. The in-service teacher training programme is designed to empower Rwandan school teachers to use ICT as an educational tool to enhance their teaching and learning.

This course considers how, despite its immense diversity, Africa continues to hold purchase as both a geographical entity and meaningful knowledge category. It examines the relationship between articulations of “Africa” and projects like European imperialism, developments in the biological sciences, African de-colonization and state-building, and the imagining of the planet’s future. Readings in anthropology and history are organized around five themes: space and place, race, representation, self-determination, and time.

The goal of this seminar is to have open discussions of controversial political and social issues and raise awareness of current world events in an informal setting. Discussions for the first part of each class will focus on current events from that week, while in the second part of class students will discuss a scheduled issue in greater detail. Scheduled issues include the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the regulation of marijuana, how our society should punish criminals, genocide in Rwanda and Sudan, discrimination in our society today, the future of social security, whether pornography is sexist, and where we can go from here in the Arab/Israeli Conflict. Discussions will be supplemented by readings, films, and public speakers. Students will also be encouraged to read news media from around the world.

D-Lab Development addresses issues of technological improvements at the micro level for developing countries—in particular, how the quality of life of low-income households can be improved by adaptation of low cost and sustainable technologies. Discussion of development issues as well as project implementation challenges are addressed through lectures, case studies, guest speakers and laboratory exercises. Students form project teams to partner with mostly local level organizations in developing countries, and formulate plans for an IAP site visit. (Previous field sites include Ghana, Brazil, Honduras and India.) Project team meetings focus on developing specific projects and include cultural, social, political, environmental and economic overviews of the countries and localities to be visited as well as an introduction to the local languages.

This collection of activities and resources is a companion guide for the 15-minute film Defying genocide. The history of the Holocaust and the 1994 Rwandan genocide illustrate the entire spectrum of human behavior, from unimaginable evil to extraordinary goodness.

Through a study of the Holocaust, Rwanda, and genocide, students learn that genocide occurs because individuals, organizations, and governments make choices to participate, resist, or turn away.

Students can also see that at the same time human beings have potential to inflict harm and suffering, they have the potential to rescue and to stand up against evil. This course seeks to answer fundamental questions about racial and ethnic politics. To begin, what are the bases of ethnic and racial identities? What accounts for political mobilization based upon such identities? What are the political claims and goals of such mobilization and is conflict between groups and/or with government forces inevitable? How do ethnic and racial identities intersect with other identities, such as gender and class, which are themselves the sources of social, political, and economic cleavages? Finally, how are domestic ethnic/racial politics connected to international human rights? To answer these questions, the course begins with an introduction to dominant theoretical approaches to racial and ethnic identity. The course then considers these approaches in light of current events in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe, and the United States.

How do we, as youth, learn from the conflict in Rwanda to strengthen media access and quality in our own communities? In this program, students will explore the role of the media in Rwanda, before, during, and after the genocide and explore how to expand media access, quality, and equity in their communities and around the world.

This course examines systematically, and comparatively, great and middle power military interventions, and candidate military interventions, into civil wars from the 1990s to the present. These civil wars did not easily fit into the traditional category of vital interest. These interventions may therefore tell us something about broad trends in international politics including the nature of unipolarity, the erosion of sovereignty, the security implications of globalization, and the nature of modern western military power.

This is a unit of study whose competency is to describe the functions and purpose of internet in the classroom and demonstrate the capability of using the internet. The objectives are: know and understand different internet applications and identify different areas where internet functions are applicable in the classroom. Identify the threats to students of using the internet.

This is a unit of Study from the Rwanda ICT Essentials for Teachers Course. Teachers should be able to explain how existing and planned national policies impact classroom practices and how their classroom practices correspond to and support policies related to ICT. So on completion of the unit teachers should know and understand existing and planned national policies related to ICTs in Education, identify how classroom practices correspond to and support national policies;
Demonstrate a determination to play a positive role in nation building.

This is a unit of study whose competency is to intergrate the use of a computer laboratory into ongoing teacher activities and manage the use of supplementary ICT resources with individuals and small groups of students in the regular classroom so as to not disrupt the other instructional activities in the class.
The objective is to identify and understand different ways to organize ICT in the school, laboratory/Classroom.
