Unit 00: Orientation & Baseline Survey

Unit 01 - Hardware
'Describe and demonstrate the use of common hardware' is the competency of this unit

Unit 02 - Troubleshooting ICT
Demonstrate ability to perform basic maintenance and repair on hardware and assist in software troubleshooting.

Unit 03 - Educational Internet
Describe the functions and purposes of internet in the classroom and demonstrate the capability of using internet.

Unit 04 - Word Processing
Describe and demonstrate the basic tasks and uses of word processors, such as text entry, editing text, formatting text and printing.

Unit 05 - Record Keeping (Spreadsheets)
Use ICT to support class administration through the keeping of a digital class record system using a spreadsheet package.

Unit 06 - eMail & Social Media
Describe the functions and purposes of internet in the classroom and demonstrate the capability of using internet including e-mail, search, and social media functions in classwork.

This is a unit of study whose competency is to describe the functions and purpose of internet in the classroom and demonstrate the capability of using the internet. The objectives are: know and understand different internet applications and identify different areas where internet functions are applicable in the classroom. Identify the threats to students of using the internet.

This is a unit of Study from the Rwanda ICT Essentials for Teachers Course. Teachers should be able to explain how existing and planned national policies impact classroom practices and how their classroom practices correspond to and support policies related to ICT. So on completion of the unit teachers should know and understand existing and planned national policies related to ICTs in Education, identify how classroom practices correspond to and support national policies;
Demonstrate a determination to play a positive role in nation building.

This is a unit of study whose competency is to describe the purpose and basic functions of graphics software to create a simple graphic display. The Objectives are: Know and understand graphics software concepts and identify basic graphics software functions. Describe the function and purpose of graphics software.

This is a unit of study whose competency is to explain Basic ICT Concepts, use and demonstrate the use of common hardware the objectives are: Know and understand basic ICT concepts and describe the function and purpose of ICT tools. Identify computer parts and its peripherals.

This is a unit of study whose competency whose competency is to demonstrate how various ICT can be used to support the teaching of the curriculum. The objectives are:
Identify and understand the use of ICT  to support the curriculum and improve assessment and select digital resources to support curriculum and assessment and evaluate digital resources to support curriculum and assessment, develop ICT based learning activities/ exercises. 
Appreciate the support of digital resources and ICT based learning activities/ exercises in curriculum and assessment.

This is a unit of study whose competency is to intergrate the use of a computer laboratory into ongoing teacher activities and manage the use of supplementary ICT resources with individuals and small groups of students in the regular classroom so as to not disrupt the other instructional activities in the class.
The objective is to identify and understand different ways to organize ICT in the school, laboratory/Classroom.

This is a unit of study whose competency is to locate necessary resources that help to acquire additional subject matter and pedagogical knowledge for professional development. The objectives are: identify relevant resources for professional development and collaborative teacher networks. Discuss the advantages of collaborative networks and participate in collaborative teacher networks.

This is a unit of study whose competency is to demonstrate how various ICT can be used in the curriculum and be used to improve assessment. The objectives are: Identify and understand the use of ICT to improve assessment and appreciate the support of digital tools to support assessment. Select digital resources and tools to support assessment.

This is a unit of study whose competency is to Incorporate appropriate ICT activities into lesson plans so as to support student acquisition of school subject matter knowledge and use presentation software and digital resources to support instruction and problem solving in the classroom.

This is a unit of study whose competency is to Manage student project-based learning activities in a technology-enhanced environment to support collaboration.

By the end of this unit you should be able to explain basic ICT concepts, use and demonstrate the use of software applications (particularly Word Processor).

Rwanda’s Vision 2020 aims to transform the country into a knowledge-based, technology-led and middle income society by the year 2020. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is considered a ubiquitous tool that will energize the country’s socio-economic development. Enhancing teacher capabilities in and through ICT is one of the strategies used by the Government of Rwanda to develop a high quality skills and knowledge base, leveraging ICT across various socio-economic sectors of the country. Training teachers in ICT will increase the resource base and improve education delivery at all levels, hence the need to institutionalize ICT usage and training for all teachers.
