For many Americans, their fondest memories revolve around a library card. From searching through the stacks, to getting a return date stamped on the back of a new favorite book, libraries are a quintessential part of how Americans learn and engage with their local communities. Since this countrys founding, public libraries have received broad and consistent popular support for their democratic missions and services. The ability to access free information has become a core ideal of what it means to be an American citizen, despite periods of historic inequality. Libraries help make this access possible by placing public benefit at the center of their work and continually adapting their strategies to meet changing public needs over time. This exhibition tells the story of the American public library system, its community impact, and the librarians who made it possiblefrom the founding of the first US libraries through the first one hundred years of service. This exhibition was created as part of the DPLAs Public Library Partnerships Project in collaboration with partners and participants from Digital Commonwealth, Digital Library of Georgia, Minnesota Digital Library, Montana Memory Project, and Mountain West Digital Library.

There seems to be little resistance to the idea that children and teens learn in public library spaces. However, many public librarians do not see themselves as teachers. This implies that much of the learning that happens in public libraries is incidental—tangential to the “real” purpose and design of these spaces and programs.
In this book, we make the case that public librarians should embrace an explicit instructional role as a core part of their professional practice. Inside, you’ll find both a comprehensive review of what is known so far about instruction for youth in public libraries and a primer on core educational concepts and frameworks for current and future public librarians. Each chapter includes real-world examples of libraries and librarians who are already practicing powerful teaching.
We hope that this text will inspire a new group of students, practitioners, and researchers to expand on our ideas, create innovative forms of teaching and learning that are unique to public libraries, and engage all children and teens in powerful and meaningful learning experiences.

This is a textbook for library science students and librarians on systems librarianship. It includes seven chapters that begin with an overview of systems librarianship as a profession. The work then proceeds to cover and demonstrate a series of technical topics that include creating Linux virtual machines using Google Cloud, learning to use the Linux command line, and learning to use Git and GitHub for project management. Based on those demonstrations, the work then walks readers through the process of creating a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) server, installing and configuring open source content management systems (WordPress and Omeka), and installing and configuring an open source integrated library system (Koha ILS).
