The Own It! Handbooks are guide books for a transformative after-school, trauma-informed enrichment program. The 21st Century Health Challenges & Inequities handbook provides lessons & activities about essential elements of the American health and healthcare system. In 2020, the strengths and weaknesses of American health care were brought powerfully into each home by the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. Like prior 20th century health crises --the 1918 flu, polio, AIDS -- COVID-19 represented a fundamental challenge to all Americsans. This Handbook seeks to help us better understand how our healthcare systems can better serve the American people.Own It! also nurtures academic skills, personal growth and leadership. It uses history to connect our past to our future, as part of the Own Your History® (OYH) Collection. But Own It! is not “school” and it differs from traditional approaches to history.

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:
"HIV is a lifelong illness that affects millions of people worldwide and in the US disproportionally affects men who have sex with men. Past research has shown that men who have sex with men have a distinct microbiome from other groups. Additionally, the lymphoid tissue invaded by HIV-1 after infection is partially regulated by the gut microbiome. However, little is known about the microbiome’s role in HIV-1 susceptibility and progression. In a recent study, researchers found bacteria that enhance inflammation were more abundant in the gut as well as a decrease in important commensal bacteria that are protective, months before HIV-1 infection. Increased prevalence of certain Prevotella species and decreased prevalence of Bacteroides species in particular could result in inflammation. As other research has shown, some species of Prevotella and Bacteroides can play pro- and anti-inflammatory roles, respectively..."

There continues to be a lack of health sex education that is queer and trans inclusive. Many of us are not exposed to our resources until later in life yet must learn everything regarding heterosexual sex practices and resources. This feels extremely homophobic and transphobic given the health induced epidemic we as a community experienced 40 years ago during the HIV/AIDS crisis. Now, in the midst of another global pandemic, reminiscent of survival’s guilt and potential recollections of the past and feelings of “we’ve been here before," we must educate and provide adequate resources around health education. In this short I engage in a reflective platíca where I revisit the first date with my partner where I learn about his status of being HIV+. The aim is to understand how we can move towards destigmatizing sex in our communities that are impacted by HIV and provide current resources, practices, and ultimately share how I am positively in love.

Episode 3 of the Swedish Global Health Podcast. In April 2019, a youth-led panel with representatives from youth and student organizations and global health leaders took place at our house in Stockholm.
Before the panel, we had the opportunity to sit down with Peter Sands (Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria) and Dr Seth Berkley (CEO of Gavi the Vaccine Alliance) to discuss their respective work and personal engagement in global health. It became an interesting dialogue spanning over sustainable development goals, barriers to gain impact to achieve the 2030 agenda, the role of stakeholder engagement and reigniting global solidarity. We hope you enjoy it! -------- The Swedish Global Health Podcast - A Podcast about Global Health and Sustainable Development is aimed at anyone interested in knowing more about this exciting topic! It is co-produced by the Swedish Society of Medicine's Committee for Global Health and the Swedish Society of Medicine's student and junior doctor section.
