For the diaries and selected letters of French organist-composer Jeanne Demessieux (1921-1968), this publication provides French-to-English translations with annotations. Accompanying chapters introduce the context in which the diaries and letters were written or comment on their content.

Long Description:
This publication presents the diaries and selected letters of French organist-composer Jeanne Demessieux (1921-1968) in English translation. These fall into three sections. The earliest letters and diary, spanning 1932 to 1940, were written by the teenage Demessieux during her first eight years of study in Paris, mainly at the Paris Conservatory. They concern her tribulations and successes as a student of piano, composition, and organ. The second diary, with related letters, spans 1940 to 1946. The opening of the diary concerns Demessieux’s last semester of study at the Paris Conservatory; the bulk of the diary describes Demessieux’s collaboration, as organist and composer, with Marcel Dupré, and quotes from lengthy conversations she had with him. The third section consists of letters and travel diaries from Demessieux’s 1950s North American recital tours, and is a revealing glimpse of the trials of being a touring organist in a country very different from the European countries in which she ordinarily toured. Interspersed with the translations are chapters of introduction and commentary. The chapters introducing each translation describe the biographical, historical, and musical contexts of its content. The chapter following each translation comments on the subject matter, reading between the lines to demonstrate how the written words provide clues to more than first meets the eye.

The translations are annotated with notes. These explain obscure or incomplete references, provide background information, and mention when statements made can either be confirmed by other sources, or appear to be in error. In the translations spanning 1932 to 1940 and 1940 to 1946, names of historical figures mentioned are linked to short biographical notes.

The overarching goal of this exercise is for students to explore the early anthropogenic hypothesis, which claims that early agriculture had a substantial impact on greenhouse gases and global climate thousands of years ago (Ruddiman, 2003). Students compare changes in greenhouse gas concentrations that occurred thousands of years ago to more recent changes that occurred over hundreds of years. Students also relate changes in greenhouse gas concentrations to warming. The exercise is completed over a 1.5- to 2-week period as the class covers a chapter on climate change.

This book is written to alert the detective or civil investigator to what extent technology is embedded in our society and how it can be used to advance an investigation. It may also be of interest to those who do not understand the amount of data they generate which is stored on digital devices and international cloud services. With this information, they can make more informed decisions about how they use technology in their life.

It is unlikely a connected person can conduct many activities in their day without technology accumulating and storing data created by their activities and online interactions with other people. Technology is a driving feature of many individuals’ lives, but few users understand what is happening behind its functional level. Large amounts of personal data are being generated from the multitude of technological devices we interact with each day that are stored by manufacturers and service providers and used for profiling and sale. Once this data is generated and stored, evidence of activity remains on the devices and/or corporate servers where it can be used to build a profile on an individual including their personality which becomes more accurate as more data is accumulated.

Where people forget what they have done, technology never does.

This book was written by two artist educators who teach digital art and design studio foundation classes. While teaching classes that take place in software laboratories, we noticed that many of our students expected to learn to use software, but gave little consideration to aesthetics or art and design history. A typical first day question is, "Are we going to learn Photoshop in this class?" This book is a mash-up of the Bauhaus Basic Course and open source software such as Inkscape, Gimp, Firefox, and Processing. We have taken some of the visual principles and exercises from the Bauhaus Basic Course and adapted them into exercises for these applications.
