This introductory unit discusses some of the underlying concepts of health, culture, and how health informatics applications can be used to study culture.

This book serves to fill a critical gap in existing healthcare education resources, by raising healthcare professional and healthcare educators’ awareness of uncertainty tolerance. This handbook explores the impact health professions education (and educators) can have on the future healthcare workforce’s ability to manage uncertainty effectively, and provides practical approaches (including exemplar curricular templates) for supporting this essential workplace-ready, transferable attribute.

The object of the course is to teach students an approach to the study of pharmacologic agents. It is not intended to be a review of the pharmacopoeia. The focus is on the basic principles of biophysics, biochemistry and physiology, as related to the mechanisms of drug action, biodistribution and metabolism. The course consists of lectures and student-led case discussions. Topics covered include: mechanisms of drug action, dose-response relations, pharmacokinetics, drug delivery systems, drug metabolism, toxicity of pharmacological agents, drug interaction and substance abuse. Selected agents and classes of agents are examined in detail.

This unit defines privacy, confidentiality, and security of health information, including the HIPPA Privacy and Security Rules.

Students learn how biomedical engineers work with engineers and other professionals to develop dependable medical devices. Specifically, they learn about suction pumps, which are important devices to keep in good repair, especially when they are used in remote locations. Student teams brainstorm, sketch, design and create prototypes of suction pump protection devices to keep fluid from backing up and ruining the pump motors. Using a real suction pump, they conduct repeated trials to test their devices for reliability, making improvements as necessary.

This course provides an overview of public health administration and the public health system. Topics included will be historical perspectives, health care providers and points of service delivery, public health services and payment methodologies. Emphasis will be directed to populations with special needs, the role of technology in health care, health policy and access. A minimum grade of: C must be earned in this course.

This unit provides an overview of the regulation of healthcare, including regulatory and professional organizations, the regulation of safety in medicine, and key legal aspects of medicine. This unit also covers compliance issues including privacy violations, reimbursement and fraud and abuse.

This unit describes the processes used by a nurse in making clinical decisions and assessing patients. It also describes how nurses are trained, where they work and the procedures that they perform.

Students use their knowledge about how healthy heart valves function to design, construct and implant prototype replacement mitral valves for hypothetical patients' hearts. Building on what they learned in the associated lesson about artificial heart valves, combined with the testing and scoring of their prototype heart valve designs in this activity, students discover the pros and cons of different types of artificial heart valves based on materials, surgery requirements, and lifespan.

This unit covers common security concerns and safeguards, including firewalls, encryption, virus protection software and patterns, and programming for security. Additional topics include security of wireless networks, and concerns, mitigations, and regulations related to healthcare applications.
