EyeRounds Anki

EyeRounds.org is a department supported site that provides training to residents, medical students and other ophthalmologists across the world. A very important recent addition are the EyeRounds Anki flash cards.

EyeRounds Anki is a free educational resource created by Iowa ophthalmology residents for all ophthalmology residents. It utilizes “Anki,” a popular flashcard program with a spaced-repetition algorithm that works to decrease study time and increase retention. Residents are busy and usually only have small pockets of free time to study. EyeRounds Anki works to maximize the study benefit received by focusing on high-yield material that broadly covers relevant ophthalmology material. EyeRounds Anki also emphasizes clinically important topics to help residents excel with patients. The EyeRounds Anki flash cards are integrated into the vast additional resources of EyeRounds to allow users to link to further detail on a topic.

The motto of EyeRounds Anki is “80% of the material in 20% of the time.”

Factors linked to glenohumeral bone and cartilage lesions during anterior shoulder stabilization surgery

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Anterior shoulder instability is frequently linked to changes in the glenohumeral joint, including bone and cartilage lesions. But the independent factors associated with lesion occurrence aren’t well known. To address this gap, researchers from the Multicenter Orthopaedic Outcomes Network, or MOON, Shoulder Group have compared the demographic characteristics, clinical outcomes, and intraoperative findings of patients undergoing primary or revision shoulder stabilization surgery. Their results should help orthopedic surgeons better anticipate the likelihood of encountering bone loss and cartilaginous defects during surgery, which could improve treatment. The team performed a cross-sectional study of data from 545 participants enrolled in the MOON Shoulder Group database. Demographic data and patient-reported outcomes were collected preoperatively using standard questionnaires, and intraoperative findings were contributed by 25 orthopedic surgeons practicing at 11 United States institutions..."

Fear in Humans and Nonhuman Animals
Unrestricted Use
CC BY
Rating
0.0 stars

Fear is a physiological, behavioral, and emotional reaction to stimuli that an animal encounters (Horwitz, 2013). In many species across the animal kingdom, the physiological reaction results in an increase in heart rate, increased respiratory rate (panting), sweating, trembling, pacing, and possibly urination and defecation. Fear is an appropriate response to environments and stimuli that are potentially harmful to the animal, which could utilize a creature’s fight or flight response and preserve its life. In this resource, fear of human and nonhuman animals, along with potential treatments for fear disorders, is explored and reviewed.

Fighting liver cancer by re-awakening the immune system

It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Researchers from Japan have discovered a new method for using the immune system to attack liver cancer, the sixth most common cancer in the world. The researchers previously reported that patients with hepatitis had a higher risk of developing liver cancer when they expressed low levels of a gene called MICA. Building on this discovery, they set out to identify whether increasing the expression of this gene offers a way to treat the disease. MICA’s normal function is to alert the immune system to cells that are potentially dangerous, including those on their way to becoming cancerous. But if MICA levels drop, the immune system no longer recognizes these cells, allowing them to multiply. To find ways of turning MICA expression back on, the researchers screened a library of over 600 FDA-approved drugs on liver cancer cells and identified a single drug, vorinostat, that greatly increased MICA levels..."
