Blood is supplied to the brain from a ventral arterial supply in all species; from a circle of arteries called the Circle of Willis (also called the cerebral arterial circle or arterial circle of Willis) which lies ventrally to the hypothalamus where it forms a loose ring around the infundibular stalk. Although the appearance of the circle of Willis is fairly constant amongst mammals, the sources of blood supply to the circle and the direction of flow around the circle are very species specific. Blood is supplied to the brain by the internal carotid artery in dogs and horses whilst in other domestic species the main blood supply is from branches of the maxillary artery.

"People can learn a lot from clinical trials -- like whether a new treatment works, whether it has serious side effects, or whether it would be cost-effective. How much a trial tells us, though, depends on what the researchers looked for and how they measured those outcomes. Unfortunately, people doing trials often don’t consult with patients -- or even with other researchers -- about what outcomes to focus on. With each researcher choosing their own outcomes to measure, comparisons between trials are difficult, and without input from patients, the most relevant ones are sometimes missed. It’s increasingly clear that selecting relevant outcomes is an important part of trial design, and that standardization could get more out of each trial, reduce waste in research, and move science and health care forward faster. To help, the COMET Initiative has written a new handbook on how to choose the most important outcomes..."

This lesson provides an overview of the life and work of African American economist Glenn Cartman Loury (b.1948), one of America’s most provocative thinkers on issues related to race, poverty, and social policy. A technical economist by training, Loury is usually identified as a Black conservative, though his worldview has undergone a series of transformations since he first emerged as an outspoken Reaganite in the 1980s.
Born and raised in a working-class neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago, Loury rose through the ranks of elite academia to become the first Black tenured professor of economics at Harvard in 1982, doing groundbreaking work on “social capital.” Students will discover his life and work, and have the opportunity to discuss recent history and current events in light of his insights.
