This subject is designed for upper level undergraduates and graduate students as an introduction to politics and the policy process in modern Japan. The semester is divided into two parts. After a two-week general introduction to Japan and to the dominant approaches to the study of Japanese history, politics and society, we will begin exploring five aspects of Japanese politics: party politics, electoral politics, interest group politics, bureaucratic politics, and policy, which will be broken up into seven additional sections. We will try to understand the ways in which the actors and institutions identified in the first part of the semester affect the policy process across a variety of issues areas.

This activity includes the social structure of the United States during the War in Vietnam. Specifically, this activity focuses on how pop music influenced culture in the war effort at home and abroad. This is a part of standard 7.7 for HS United States History. Driving Q: Vietnam was a time in America with great social unrest among youth, adults, the government, and everyone in between. With the rising conflicts of the time, music became a prominent aspect of expression. Protest songs crowded the Billboard charts and the record stores. What effect did pop music have on the Vietnam War? - This question causes students to go on an in depth journey to the past to discover music, history, and the effect it had on America. This is relevant because it focuses on social unrest in Vietnam Era America which tackles standard 7.7. This question is entirely based on the amount of research and the side that the students take on the topic, therefore the students could all have different answers. As a teacher I always like to go "full circle" with what we learned in class for the day. So in terms of the driving question, I would ask at the beginning of class What effect did pop music have on the Vietnam War? and then reiterate the question at the end of class. This allows the students to have the question in mind while we go through the whole lesson, so by the end they have complete and well developed thoughts on the topic at hand. Grabber: I would open with Robin Williams yelling “GOOOOOOD MORNING VIETNAM!” Then I would play a quick video of samples capturing the music made during Vietnam War. This grabber hooks the learner because of the relationship most stuents aleady have with Robin Williams as an actor and with the music being played. The grabber conjures up a natural engagement from the students by using a high emotion situation with the booming voice of Robin Williams and the visual and audible factors in the video that draw in the audience. This is authentic and relevant because the students will often pay more attention to a lesson if they can connect with the task. The clip from the movie revolves around the whole topic of music during Vietnam because Robin Williams' character portrays a radio DJ stationed in Vietnam during the war. The videos and sounds will be straight from the vietnam era making them authentic. This workshop provides an introduction to urban environmental design and explores the potential of information technology and the Internet to transform public education, city design, and community development in inner-city neighborhoods. Integration of comprehensive (“top-down”) and grassroots (“bottom-up”) approaches to design and planning is a major theme.
Students will work in a real neighborhood with real people on a real project, putting theory into practice and reflecting on insights gained in the process. We will study environmental and community history and devise designs for vacant land near a middle school in West Philadelphia within the context of planning for the larger community and watershed.

This course introduces students to the techniques of participatory action research (PAR) and the practice of case study research. PAR processes are place or case-specific, place a premium on local ways of knowing, and gauge the success of research in terms of what partner-communities do with the knowledge that is co-produced. The objective of PAR is to generate the ideas, information, and understandings that ought to inform efforts to promote social change. By focusing on ways of co-producing knowledge using various forms of data collection and analysis, students will learn how the people and communities who are often university partners in applied social science research can use findings or results from PAR case studies to address the challenges they confront in their communities.

Neo-liberal policies and institutional changes have produced a huge and growing number of people with sufficiently common experiences to be called an emerging class. In this book Guy Standing introduces what he calls the Precariat - a growing number of people across the world living and working precariously, usually in a series of short-term jobs, without recourse to stable occupational identities or careers, stable social protection or protective regulations relevant to them. They include migrants, but also locals.

Standing argues that this class of people could produce new instabilities in society. They are increasingly frustrated and dangerous because they have no voice, and hence they are vulnerable to the siren calls of extreme political parties. He outlines a new kind of good society, with more people actively involved in civil society and the precariat re-engaged. He goes on to consider one way to a new better society -- an unconditional basic income for everyone, contributed by the state, which could be topped up through earned incomes.

This is a topical, and a radical book, which will appeal to a broad market concerned by the increasing problems of labour insecurity and civic disengagement.
