Short Description:
Higher education institutions are realizing that students want and need flexible options for attending and participating in courses. During the COVID pandemic, the world saw that many jobs could be done online. We also saw how many college and university courses and programs could be completed online and still produce quality graduates. This set a precedent for employees to expect more flexible options upon their return to the workplace. It also set a precedent for students to request more flexible options upon their return to campuses. Educational institutions can reach more students by offering flexible learning options and therefore, increase revenue and maintain growth, so it is an attractive option. Students prefer flexible course design because it allows them to customize a work-school-life balance that will support them in meeting their personal, work, and academic goals. This book asks questions about whether or not trimodal flexible (HyFlex) courses are worth their costs and challenges and suggests that a bimodal flexible (ByFlex) course design, with fewer challenges, will still meet the students' needs for flexibility and, therefore, may be a better choice. Flexible learning is happening and is probably here to stay!

The aim of this book is to build a bridge between these two perspectives, linking theory with practice.

Major topic areas include the history of conservation, the social and scientific foundations of conservation, threats to biodiversity, applied conservation methods at both the species and ecosystem levels, the accommodation of climate change, and structured decision making. The narrative is focused specifically on Canada. It has always seemed to me that the many parts that make up the subject of biology are related to each other more like the nodes of a web than as a linear collection of independent topics. So I believe that the power of hypertext will be better suited to learning about biology than is the linear structure of a printed textbook. Another disadvantage of printed textbooks is the inevitable delay between the time that new advances in biology are reported and the time that they can become incorporated in a printed book (often several years). Material here can be updated promptly. So although some of this information has been drawn from the sixth edition of the author's text Biology published in 1994 by Wm. C. Brown, every effort has been made to adapt the material to the opportunities provided by an online text.
