Other Worlds: An Intro to Afrofuturism

This offering is an approximately ten-minute audio introduction to Afrofuturism. Approachable and digestible, this audio short guides students to engage with Afrofuturism not only as an analytic tool but as a conceptual approach to community organizing and creative work. At the end, students are invited into two different writing prompts. The short concludes with approximately 1 minute of instrumental music, no voice-over.

Teachers face clashes each day. These are of denials and dejection. The classrooms have been failing to keep the children attentive and dedicated to the instructions. The participation in co-curricular and extra-curricular has declined across the institutions. There was a time when we saw, not just huge numbers but, an immense amount of enthusiasm for cultural and literary events. Now. people who are at the helm of affairs are getting passive; they have actually got trapped in a vicious circle of academic duties.

Students know the worth of participation as it gets them certificates and points for jobs. There was a time when participation was selfless and the belonging was quite visible. Teachers and Students were mad about doing their best and the outcome was a healthy competition. As event management team volunteers, anchors, and announcers, we Learned to Learn. And the by-products of that learning have come automatically in the form of careers and recognised versatility at the workplace.

Programming continues to be a an important skill in the modern world. Childhood is a great time start learning programming and to develop computational thinking creativity, and problem- solving skills!

This course teaches programming in Scratch through fun videos which explains programming in an inspiring and clear way. These are accompanied with assignments which let kids to practice programming and create programs they will like to use themselves!

On a weekly basis, we will be creating a game: a maze, an aquarium, a Flappy Bird Game and a Super Mario look-a-like. Every week, new programming blocks are taught and together we’re working on ways to improve your written code.

This course is an English version of a course that was used in primary schools in The Netherlands with great success. The material follows the educational curriculum for programming in primary education of The Netherlands.

Do you want to participate with more children? Create a personal account for every child or pupil in order for them to work at their own pace. Once they have fulfilled the entire course and were upgraded to the ID Verified track, a Scratch diploma with their names will be handed out.

Studies in Drama: Too Hot to Handle: Forbidden Plays in Modern America

Unlike film, theater in America does not have a ratings board that censors content. So plays have had more freedom to explore and to transgress normative culture. Yet censorship of the theater has been part of American culture from the beginning, and continues today. How and why does this happen, and who decides whether a play is too dangerous to see or to teach? Are plays dangerous? Sinful? Even demonic? In our seminar, we will study plays that have been censored, either legally or extra-legally (i.e. refused production, closed down during production, denied funding, or taken off school reading lists). We’ll look at laws, both national and local, relating to the “obscene”, as well as unofficial practices, and think about the way censorship operates in American life now. And of course we will study the offending texts, themselves, to find what is really dangerous about them, for ourselves.

The goal of this exercise is to leverage the interdependent between writing and thinking and, ultimately, to show your students how writing is, in fact, thinking. More precisely, the goal is for students to create their own, original and arguable thought in the form of a topic sentence. Coming up with your own, arguable thought is hard, and often we expect such thoughts to somehow spring magically from our brains. However, the easiest way to start this process is to start with what someone else has written.
