Critical Appraisal of a Randomized, Controlled, Double-Blind Trial Entitled“Colchicine in Patients with Chronic Coronary Disease”

Rating
0.0 stars

This is a critical appraisal of a randomized, controlled, double-blind trial on the effects of colchicine to patients with chronic coronary disease. A clinical scenario was presented to determine the applicability of the trial to an actual patient from the general population. The evaluation method followed the population (P), intervention (I), comparison (C), outcome (O) design. Overall, the appraisal revealed that all valdiity criteria were met in this study.  The trial provide evidence suggesting that inflammation plays a causal role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease and related complications and that interventions to mitigate inflammation, like the colchicine, may reduce the risk of cardiovascular events.

This stormy first draft of workshops commingles my learning design practices with two OERs, Hybrid-Flex Course Design and Critical Friend Review. What I know is missing in this wireframe is all the bits and pieces that bring life to a learning design: videos, images, emergent stories, and organizational narratives. At times like these, I appreciate the 5Rs of Open Educational Resources (OERs). I look forward to discovering how this draft moves forward in the community.

MHCC - WR122

Short Description:
Using a combination of the newest findings in hemispheric science, neuropsychology, and brain development, along with the long-established rhetorical algorithms for analyzing the structure of arguments, this course explores the boundaries of critical and creative thinking in pursuit of developing a clearer and more robust model for the construction and deconstruction of various forms of argument. A variety of "texts" are used to help students develop rhetorical analysis skills, critical thinking tools and a diverse, integrative apparatus for establishing the veracity of truth claims in both academic and cultural contexts.

Long Description:
This project was funded by the MHCC Foundation OER Grant Program and published by MHCC Library Press. MARC record available at the end of the book.

Critical thinking pharmacology worksheets

Successful Pharmacology course completion requires students to mentally overlay complex mechanisms of drug action onto intricate body physiology to make sense of how drugs both correct and cause disease. Unfortunately, many students (undergraduate – health professional) lack the needed study/critical thinking skills required to navigate this complex curriculum. Providing students with lecture content and study guides is only a partial solution as they often fail, alone, to adequately convey the thought structure required for student success. Therefore, this series of application/critical thinking worksheets was developed to demystify, model, and guide students through the critical thinking processes that need to be employed when engaging the Pharmacology curriculum.

Using a website simulation tool, students build on their understanding of random processes on networks to interact with the graph of a social network of individuals and simulate the spread of a disease. They decide which two individuals on the network are the best to vaccinate in an attempt to minimize the number of people infected and "curb the epidemic." Since the results are random, they run multiple simulations and compute the average number of infected individuals before analyzing the results and assessing the effectiveness of their vaccination strategies.

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Real-world data and real-world evidence are terms widely used in the field of health care. In fact, various stakeholders are showing increasing interest in using real world data and real world evidence. Pharmaceutical companies, for example, use real world data for various purposes—from the early stages of development to post-launch. One hot topic focuses on using real world data and real world evidence to support regulatory decision making to deliver drugs faster to patients with high medical needs. This has been the subject of active discussion in the US, Europe, Japan and other countries, leading to regulatory reform and improvement of the implementation environment. However, there are barriers to the regulatory acceptance and use of both real world data and real world evidence. Real world data should be evaluated not only for quality but also for data relevance. There is a lack of universally accepted methodological criteria..."

The rest of the transcript, along with a link to the research itself, is available on the resource itself.
