Included are two modules for COM 346: Health Communication that employ principles of culturally responsive education, universal design and open pedagogy.

Module one: “Academic citizenship: Health Communication” details a three-part learning opportunity to be spread out over the duration of the course. The idea here is to flatten the distance between instructor and learner and support student ownership of the learning experience.

Module two: “Final reflection: Health Communication” promotes reflection through a flexible invitation that offers learners traditional and artistic opportunities to share their “golden nugget” take-away points from our learning experience.

This lesson provides an overview of the life and work of African American economist Glenn Cartman Loury (b.1948), one of America’s most provocative thinkers on issues related to race, poverty, and social policy. A technical economist by training, Loury is usually identified as a Black conservative, though his worldview has undergone a series of transformations since he first emerged as an outspoken Reaganite in the 1980s.

Born and raised in a working-class neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago, Loury rose through the ranks of elite academia to become the first Black tenured professor of economics at Harvard in 1982, doing groundbreaking work on “social capital.” Students will discover his life and work, and have the opportunity to discuss recent history and current events in light of his insights.

It’s a journey that might surprise Sowell’s critics – and that students of all ages will find compelling, empowering, and a wonderful introduction to a brilliant mind. The popular economist Walter E. Williams was one of the most prominent libertarian commentators on issues of race, poverty, and prosperity, spreading his message through a weekly syndicated column, scholarly publications, and a variety of media appearances. Born and raised in the Philadelphia projects, Williams overcame personal and political barriers on his journey from blue-collar kid working odd jobs to a distinguished writer and professor. Prolific and provocative, Williams appealed to both specialists and lay people, and his great love was teaching economics. Throughout his life, a network of devoted friends, family, mentors, and colleagues made his success possible.

You should have learned about the effect of the Coronavirus with the use of OER support. 

This lesson plan was created by Carolyn Hance as part of the 2020 NDE OER Workshop. Educators worked with coaches to create quality curriculum that can be shared with others. This project is designed for Grades 9-12 English Language Arts students. Students will explore journal writing. Students will create personal journals of their COVID-19 experiences using correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc. This is a prolonged project intended to last throughout the year, but can be adapted in many ways. This project addresses the following NDE Standards:   This project will be used throughout the year in my class, but could be a much shorter project if you wish. 

"Future Ready: Financial Literacy" is an educational resource that explores credit cards, emphasizing the importance of understanding their costs and potential hazards. Learners will develop rational thinking and decision-making skills through a cost-benefit analysis. The content focuses on financial responsibility, highlighting the benefits of wise money management and the costs of irresponsibility. The resource equips individuals with essential knowledge to make informed financial choices and maintain a healthy credit score.

Materials below are selected for a graduate level course, CSE 629: Web-based Website Design. The course is intended for MSEd: Educational Technology students who require a course that gives them experience in developing a professional website or portfolio using web-based tools. A second goal is to offer hands on experience creating accessible content while practicing principles of good usability and user experience (UX). Additionally, this course is meant to help address a sore point for many educators by providing a basic understanding of project management (PM) practices. Thus planning the website (the project), time investment, resources, and how to accessibly and effectively deliver content are key components of this course.

Since different people teach this course, this collection of resources is meant to suggest a set of common resources for faculty to integrate into their courses while allowing them to personalize themes and emphases. Hopefully, faculty will also add materials to this content as well.
