NEXT.cc is an eco web that develops ethical imagination and environmental stewardship. NEXT.cc introduces what design is, what design does, and why design is important. It offers activities across nine scales – nano, pattern, object, space, architecture, neighborhood, urban, region, and world. NEXT.cc's journeys introduce activities online, in the classroom, in the community and globally. NEXT.cc journeys and activities are supported with links to museums, institutions and contemporary practices. The eco web network of journeys provides a solid foundation for newly established NAAEE North American Association of Environmental Education standards with place based design activities that address the five goals of environmental education: Awareness, Knowledge, Attitudes and Environmental Ethic, Citizen Action Skills, and Citizen Action Experiences. NEXT.cc is based on Wisconsin Art and Design Standards and Common Core State Standards. NEXT.cc plans to reach young people, their teachers and their families with meaningful learning experiences that create positive influence on lives and outcomes.

ScholCom202X: an interactive fiction game about being a scholarly communication librarian
Unrestricted Use
CC BY
Rating
0.0 stars

In ScholCom 202X, you'll take on the role of a new scholarly communication librarian at a small public university somewhere in the US in the "distant future" of the year 202X.

You'll be given a number of scenarios derived from activities and questions a real scholarly communication librarian might expect to receive. These scenarios fall into four general areas: copyright; publishing; institutional repositories; and open access.

The game has two versions, an interactive fiction format written in Ink (located in the "Ink source" and "playable" folders) and a static PDF version (in "printables").

In the interactive fiction version, after reading each scenario you'll be given a chance to consult your "augment," a smartphone-like device which contains a very brief annotated list of some relevant sources and a calendar that tracks how busy you are. In the PDF/print version, these sources are listed below the scenario text, and are open access whenever possible.

After you've read the scenario text and consulted these sources (or not), put yourself in the place of the librarian in the game and think about how you would respond. Would you try to help just the person you're currently talking to, or would you rather build resources and develop strategies that could make the question easier to answer the next time it comes up, and potentially even reach and educate people who don't know the questions to ask in the first place?

As you think through each scenario, ask yourself how you would balance the desire to do a good job against the threat of overwork. You're welcome to write out what you would do, or just think about it. The PDF versions of the scenarios can also be used to role play in a classroom setting, with one student taking on the role of the librarian and another the role of the person who needs their help.

Playable version at https://people.wou.edu/~bakersc/ScholCom202X/index.html. Additional background available at https://lisoer.wordpress.ncsu.edu/2021/05/18/new-to-the-scn-scholcom-202x-an-interactive-fiction-game/.

Sensory Details for Narrative Essays

This is an activity that can help students to get more sensory details into their narrative essays.  It could be used in the traditional classroom or online but only if the course is sychronous (i.e. via Zoom).  This is a fun activity that many students enjoy and should only take about 15-20 minutes depending on how quickly the students are able to guess each item, which is of course dependent upon how well the items have been described.

Sex Determination Game

This exercise is intended to help students understand the role of transcription factors and enhancers in differentiation in general and with sex determination specifically. Students will put events in order for male and female sex determination. Note that students do not need to know anything about sex determination to complete the exercise (but they learn it as they play), but they should have been exposed to the concepts of enhancers and transcription factors.
It should be noted that the cards saying "It's a boy" and "It's a girl" were selected to emphasize that this pathway is relevant for anatomical sex determination as opposed to gender.

Social-Emotional Learning is essential for work and school environments. Since it is the transition to high school, this is very important at the middle school level. Students will learn how to be self-aware and build healthy relationship skills. Once the entire social-emotional lesson is completed, the students learn how to: work with others, build resiliency, achieve goals, reduce bullying, and prevent risky behaviours. Vanessa Matthiessen, Parker Eklund, and Sarra Choucair

This game is designed to test, reinforce, and enhance students' understanding of Social Security Law. I've used it in several different ways: as a game that students play in class, with a prize for the winning student or team (playing the game and discussing the correct answers takes about one hour of class time); as a closed-book quiz that students take in class, followed by discussion of the correct answers (again, about one hour of class time); and as an open-book assignment that students complete before class, followed by discussion of the correct answers in class (about 30 minutes of class time).
