Two of the core competencies designated for The First Year Seminar Liberal Arts Math and Science (LMF 101) course are Integrative Learning and Global Learning along with oral communication. These abilities are exercised by students in the Career/Interview Presentation project. The main goal of the assignment is to promote student networking within the scientific community through interviews with an expert in the field. Also the FYS students will conduct background research about their career choices and use their findings to determine if they can be realized when interviewing a professional. The assignment is scaffolded whereby students will learn to use on-line resources to search for information about the profession and use on-line tools to material in preparation for the interview. Students will learn how to write professional emails, network and create PowerPoint slides. After the class presentation, students are asked to write a reflection in their ePortfolio on their career choice and interview experiences. The time dedicated for this project is on the order of weeks and counts for 20% (15% oral presentation and 5 % reflection) of the final grade.

Written nursing care plans ensure that the nurse responsible for patient care at any time during the animal's stay in the practice is confident to manage and treat the patient, to talk to the owners and give accurate updates on their animal's care, and to feel that the best possible care has been given to the animal at all times. Care plans require skill to write and this is something that improves with practise.

Caring for carers: Addressing high burnout among OB/GYNs

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Being a doctor takes its toll. Demanding workloads and performance standards can be unremitting on all doctors. In obstetrics and gynecology, we often face unique emergencies and must make quick decisions. Unlike most other specialists, OB/GYNs must respond quickly to patient demands, operate confidently and skillfully, conscious of risk, and be “on" at a moment’s notice. Understandably, OB/GYNs report some of the highest burnout rates among physicians. It’s a long-standing problem that’s finally getting attention from the medical community. In 2017, the World Medical Association made a critical addition to the Physician’s Pledge: “I WILL ATTEND to my own health, well-being, and abilities in order to provide care of the highest standard.” We must acknowledge the unique expectations of birth and further investigate the rates and impact of burnout in RANZCOG trainees and specialists in order to safely deliver the next generation..."

Carissa Moore is a four-time World Champion from Honolulu, Hawaii, and in 2021, she was the first woman to ever win a gold medal in surfing at the Olympics.

At the age of 16, she became the youngest champion at a Triple Crown of Surfing event and won the Reef Hawaiian Pro, and at the age of 18, she became the youngest person to win a surfing world title.

Since she was a young girl, Carissa’s been relentlessly focused on one thing: becoming the best in the world. Inspired by the greatest champions before her, and supported by her family to pursue her dreams, she trained for over fifteen years to finally reach the pinnacle of her sport. Having such a daunting goal enabled her to stay focused, positive, and healthy in her choices for pursuing her natural high.

Carissa has leveraged her well known name to a handful of good causes over the years. In 2010, after winning her first CT event in New Zealand, she donated her entire check to the local boardriders club in recognition of their hospitality. She’s advocated openly about the dangers of binge eating, sexism, and body shaming. And she’s an avid crusader for the environment.

SYNOPSIS: This lesson builds on students’ understanding of the cardiorespiratory system, showcases how climate change impacts cardiorespiratory health, and concludes with students exploring ways they can expand their actionable responses to climate change.

SCIENTIST NOTES: This lesson teaches students about what is in the air we breathe, how trees are important to keeping the air clean, air pollution, and how to solve some of the big global problems. Links to local New Jersey organizations are provided. The TedEd video also links to more resources about air pollution. This lesson also includes some movement and a game to help students visualize how pollutants can be removed for the air. The videos contain accurate and thought-provoking information. This resource is recommended for teaching.

POSITIVES:
-This lesson incorporates play and fun into learning about air quality and how it relates to the cardiorespiratory system.
-Students will draw direct connections between health and climate.

ADDITIONAL PREREQUISITES:
-Teachers should have access to a play space large enough to accommodate the “Catch Your Breath Game."
-Teachers should have access to balls or objects that students can throw or catch.
-Teachers should be familiar with facilitating a Socratic seminar style discussion.

DIFFERENTIATION:
-Students can write an analysis on why they think the game is called “Catch Your Breath.”
-Teachers can assign the groups to strategically place students who need support in certain areas with students who can provide that support.
-Teachers can print out the cardiorespiratory system diagram for students who would benefit from a hard copy.
-Other resources related to this lesson include this video about a nonprofit detecting deforestation and this resource to determine the tree equity score of your city or neighborhood.

It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Lung cancer is the number one cause of cancer-related death Early detection is key to beating the disease A lung tumour that’s detected early, before it grows too large or spreads to other parts of the body, can be removed by surgeons and essentially cured The problem is that early detection is tricky Most patients don’t develop symptoms until advanced disease has set in, and the most common screening methods can be expensive and impractical Scientists are working on a new blood test that could help The test can spot small bits of DNA floating around in the blood Cancer cells shed this DNA as they grow and multiply Preliminary tests in mice showed the test can detect lung tumours before they become malignant The amount of tumour DNA found in the blood went up as tumours grew, giving scientists an idea of how large a mass had become More work is needed before the test can be used to detect cancer in humans But the research suggests that spotting early-stage lung cancer may one day be.."

Catch your Breath DNA

This lesson is a self contained lesson on DNA structure.  It will keep the students busy for days and days and even a week or more.  There is no associated lecture.  It requires no knowledge of DNA or biology or anything.  The learning objective is the structure of DNA and nothing more.DNA in cells is elegant in its simplicity.  Catch your breath DNA is elegant in its simplicity.  Both are made of four things and both can only go together in one way.The core of this cool lesson plan is a paper template.  The students will be coloring the bases and cutting them out.  They can only go together one way and the students will see that. The paper templates are made on an ordinary copy machine and the template is included in the literature.  The templates are copied front and back with a front and back template. But it is not great trick.  The download includes all information and there is a video for the teacher and a video for the kids. The lesson plan is suitable for all students, from 4th grade up.  It would be suitable for college as well. The documentation can be found here https://app.box.com/s/hlhung3gz5heqmno82yc0xwfs7zl2puhIt references the videos.  But the videos is here:https://youtu.be/1BiTYfTpTu4Licensed under Creative Commons ...mrphysh

Cebranopadol targets mu receptors and elicits milder side effects than fentanyl and morphine

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"A new study in rhesus monkeys clarifies one aspect of how the new drug cebranopadol relieves pain and finds that this effective analgesic has milder side effects than fentanyl and morphine. Pure mu opioid receptor agonists like fentanyl and morphine are the most widely used analgesic drugs in medical settings. However, their severe side effects and high abuse potential have prompted the need for alternatives. Treatment with drugs that simultaneously target nociceptin receptors and mu receptors has been shown to limit mu receptor-related side effects. Cebranopadol, an effective pain reliever in rodents and humans, targets nociceptin receptors and various opioid receptors. But whether the mu opioid receptor subtype is the most important for cebranopadol analgesia is unknown, and the associated side effects haven’t been investigated in nonhuman primate models. To better evaluate cebranopadol as an analgesic alternative to pure mu agonists, researchers compared it with fentanyl and morphine..."
