Ethical and Policy Considerations for Digitizing Traditional Knowledge is a comprehensive instructional resource designed to introduce library professionals to the ethical and policy issues which accompany the digitization of traditional knowledge collections. This instructional resource includes a lesson plan, a slide deck, a case study with accompanying worksheet, and an annotated bibliography. Instructors will lead students through a lesson plan which includes identification of prior knowledge, direct instruction, guided practice and independent practice. Through this “I do, we do, you do” approach, students will learn about the definition of traditional knowledge, how and why it might be preserved, ethical considerations when preserving it, and examples of traditional knowledge collections. The resource also includes an opportunity for students to work through an authentic case study from a library which digitized a traditional knowledge collection. Using a worksheet that includes guided criteria, students can review the case study to determine how the community was considered within each stage of the digital content lifecycle. The resource also includes background reading on digitizing and preserving traditional knowledge with brief annotations for both instructors and students.

Dinosaur fossils capture the interest of students and the public, but their study, collection, and disposition often engender signficant highly-publicized controversy. As such, ethical dilemmas emerge around fossil discoveries in the realms of scientific research, including professional and personal conduct, educational and economic roles of museums, landowner rights, fossils as commodities in a capitalist economy, and science journalism. This project uses the controversy over a highly-publicized pair of dinosaur skeletons collected from private land to examine the myriad complexly intertwined ethical issues that arise from the attempt to sell these fossils at public auction for private financial benefit. Students planning careers in paleontology and geology need to be aware of these types of controversies and the ethical choices they will face.

This collection of case studies deals with ethics involved in publishing research in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Often, graduate students learn about these ethics informally as they go along and are often unaware that individual journals often have their own formal policies. This activity is intended to present students with some scenarios of "what would you do?", as well as guide them to find and read ethics policies of at least 2 scientific journals.

In this project, students research a current or past instance of ethnic or religious conflict from around the world such as ethnic cleansing and genocide. Following research, students present and reflect on causes and effects of the conflict. The project was designed for AP Human Geography but can be adapted to any global studies or issues courses.

Students will then apply the concepts of marketing segmentation, target marketing, and event positioning by analyzing data collected from an international music festival to establish the target market of the international music festival.

Risk management is a critical part of event management. This worksheet covers definitions of the key aspects of risk management and the steps taken by event management in creating a risk management plan. A case study is provided for students to apply the risk management process in an industry example.

Sponsorship management is activities that an event organization engages in to secure support from sponsors and manage the interests of sponsors at the event. The organizer and sponsor are jointly interested in successfully operating events for their mutual benefit. This section provides an overview of sponsorship management for events. The differences between sponsorship and advertising were compared for their strengths and weaknesses. The sponsorship management of a social event was discussed from the prospective from the perspective of organizers and sponsors. A case study on an LGBT+ event provided a case problem for how to construct a social media sponsorship package.

Volunteer management is an integral part of any event that relies on volunteer contributions. Managing volunteers for events is related to three related domains: events, human resources, and volunteering. Each of the domains is discussed for its relation to volunteer management in the context of a sporting event. The practice of managing volunteers is considered in terms of its phases. A real-life case is provided so that students can apply their understandings of volunteer management in resolving the case problems.

Financial management helps an event planning operation to achieve a profitable future in the competitive business environment. Astute financial management involves securing, allocating and controlling financial resources held by the operation. Good budgeting practices ensure a successful outcome of an event that meets financial objectives. A real-life case study is provided for students to apply financial management principles.

Learning Objectives:  Students will review key vocabulary related to discrimination, prejudice and specific forms of prejudice.  Students will learn about cyberhate, how it manifests itself online and the impact it has on individuals, the online community and society.  Students will reflect on examples of cyberhate speech and counterspeech.  Students will explore different responses to cyberhate.  Students will consider the importance of countering cyberhate and come up with ways to do so with ally behavior and counterspeech.
