CONTEMPORARY SCHOLARS: Thomas Sowell (1930-present)

0.0 stars

Economist, cultural historian, social theorist, and unwavering critic of misguided social policy and self-important intellectuals, Thomas Sowell is celebrated as one of America’s greatest writers for his insistence on telling unpopular truths. He’s the author of over 50 books, countless essays and articles, and 19 scholarly papers in economics. But his ideas have also been shaped by his own life story, one that took him from rural North Carolina to the streets of Harlem, from the Marine Corps to the halls of academe, and from Marxism to classical liberalism. It’s a journey that might surprise Sowell’s critics – and that students of all ages will find compelling, empowering, and a wonderful introduction to a brilliant mind. Made possible in part by the generosity of the Arthur N. Rupe Foundation.

The popular economist Walter E. Williams was one of the most prominent libertarian commentators on issues of race, poverty, and prosperity, spreading his message through a weekly syndicated column, scholarly publications, and a variety of media appearances. Born and raised in the Philadelphia projects, Williams overcame personal and political barriers on his journey from blue-collar kid working odd jobs to a distinguished writer and professor. Prolific and provocative, Williams appealed to both specialists and lay people, and his great love was teaching economics. Throughout his life, a network of devoted friends, family, mentors, and colleagues made his success possible.

Canada's Pacific Groundfish Trawl Fishery: Ecosystem Conflicts

The case study involves the B.C. groundfish trawl fishery, which came under attack from ENGOs in the mid-2000s for destruction of the aquatic habitat. Specifically, the ENGOs were concerned with he destruction of numerous coral and sponge species. The ENGOs were able to give their complaints economic teeth by threatening the industry’s access to major markets. The resource manager, the federal government, was unable to address the problem effectively at the time. The initiative to deal with the problem was taken by the industry, leading to industry –ENGO negotiations. This would never have been possible, if the industry had been unable to act as a cohesive whole. How this intra-industry cooperation was achieved is not yet fully clear. Be that as it may, the negotiations were successful and led to the world’s first habitat bycatch limitation agreement, which came into place in 2012. The case study examines the negotiations and the degree of success of the agreement. It raises the question of the applicability of the B.C. experience to other fisheries in Canada and the rest of the world.

Cancún Corner involves a negotiation between two friends and business partners over the launch of a Mexican restaurant. This is a negotiation exercise, however, it can also be used as a mediation simulation with some amendments. This simulation was designed for third level students studying negotiation and/or alternative dispute resolution (ADR). Whilst it can be used at an introductory level, it is suggested that it is most appropriate for students who have already been introduced to fundamental negotiation concepts. Guidance in relation to modifying this exercise as a mediation simulation is included. Please note that a mediation simulation will require a group of three students (or four students if a co-mediation model is adopted). This simulation may be used to introduce identity-based, conflict of values disputes. Identity may affect the substance of a negotiation nad has the potential to make even simple negotiations difficult to traverse. Teaching Notes include General Instructions, Confidential Instructions for Jane Parker, and Confidential Instructions for Sarah Byrne.

Increased energy use per capita is linked to decreased poverty rates. Modest energy increases can lead to significant poverty reduction, but the relationship is not always linear. Factors like governance and social policies also influence poverty levels. Beyond a certain threshold, further energy increases have diminishing returns.

President Biden authorized the release of 180 million barrels of crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to lower gasoline prices amid the Russia-Ukraine War. While previous releases had modest effects, the magnitude of this release is significant. Estimates suggest a reduction of $0.15 to $0.38 per gallon at the pump.

This case seminar text describes a situation with conflicting interests and can be used to discuss child protection. There are multiple conflicts in the situation at hand, between the welfare of children and the autonomy of the mother, between the community needs and the care for the children and the mother, and between upholding a reputation and intervening for the best sake of the vulnerable.

Students should be encouraged to scrutinize their standpoints, not just reacting with a gut feeling. This will thus also be an exercise in a professional attitude.
