How to use OER Commons

How to Use the Hub Iowa AEA OER

This Hub allows for groups of Iowa educators (both within districts, between them and those beyond K-12) to find and share resources. They can organize those resources into their own folders. As a group, they can align those resources to Iowa Core and Next Gen standards, as well as evaluate content using common rubrics for quality. Individual teachers can take those resources and use onsite tools to remix them and customize them, sharing them back with the group. And finally, those resources can be accessed directly from the local district's learning management system.

Open Author

Get started using our OER authoring tool, Open Author. This video walks you through how to author and remix; including how to add and format content, import and attach resources, embed media, add co-authors, check for accessibility, describe your resource, select a license, align to standards, publish, and download.

Evaluate

Use the Equip or Achieve Rubrics to align and evaluate resources

Alignment and OER Evaluation Tools are found on all resource pages in OER Commons. Users can align appropriate resources to the Educational Standards and use the Equip or Archive rubrics evaluate the resource against certain aspects of quality.

Open Author

Create open, sharable, content using our Authoring Tools.

ISKME's authoring tools make it easy to combine text, pictures, sound, files and video, and save them as openly licensed educational resources—which can then be shared with friends, colleagues and educators from around the world.

Submit Resources

Click the Submit a resource button on the Contribute page.

Submit open educational resources to OER Commons if you control the copyright or licensing, and if the materials are hosted online. OER Commons will create a record of the resources and make it discoverable to other users.

Lesson Builder

Develop instructor or student facing content with the Open Lesson Builder

The Lesson Builder allows authors to create both student and instructor facing content views. Authors are encouraged to include overviews, pedagogical supporting text, and instructions for both students and other users of the resource. The lesson can consist of sequenced tasks, which can incorporate a step-by-step approach to learning. Each task can have associated resources available for download
