This is a classroom activity report on teaching algorithms as part of a second course in computer programming. Teaching an algorithm in an introductory level programming class is often a dry task for the instructor and the rewards for the student are abstract. To make the learning of algorithms and software more rewarding, this assignment employs a Rubik’s cube.

This activity helps students evaluate their own authority on a particular subject so that they can begin to understand how authority is created and effectively evaluate the authority of other sources they encounter. Additional evaluation criteria is also introduced.

This assigment was developed in the context of LaGuardia's Center for Teaching and Learning sponsored Learning Matters mini grant Connection Between First Year Seminar and Capstone Learning Experiences. It provides Liberal Arts experience to students across the academic spectrum and is designed for students in LMF 101 (First-Year Seminar for Liberal Arts: Math & Science) and is conducted in conjunction with students from a capstone course, LIB 200 (Science, Technology, and Humanism). The assignment aligns with the Inquiry and Problem-Solving Core Competency and the Written Ability. In this assignment, LMF 101 students research and read several articles centered on the topic of Women in STEM. They then write an essay that integrates the information from these sources to address the history, biases, and potential causes of the underrepresentation of Women in STEM. LIB 200 students peer review these essays, and LMF 101 students, in turn, respond to these peer reviews. The assignment concludes with a combined class discussion on the topic and the process. The overall goals for this assignment which also reflect the dimensions of the Inquiry and Problem Solving Core Competency and the Written Communication Ability rubrics are the following: Students will utilize the appropriate library search engines to find a resource relevant to a particular topic. Students will analyze and integrate evidence from multiple sources on a complicated topic, and they will use the evidence they gathered to answer questions and arrive at logical conclusions. Students will assess the reliability of data and/or claims made in the literature. Students will cite sources appropriately. Students will understand the importance of peer review, understand how constructive criticism can help improve scholarly work, and learn how to respond to feedback in ways to improve the outcome of their work.

10. Brave New World - XR - What is Immersive Technology?

The trifecta of globalization, urbanization and digitization have created new opportunities and challenges across our nation, cities, boroughs and urban centers. Cities are in a unique position at the center of commerce and technology becoming hubs for innovation and practical application of emerging technology. In this rapidly changing 24/7 digitized world, city governments worldwide are leveraging innovation and technology to become more effective, efficient, transparent and to be able to better plan for and anticipate the needs of its citizens, businesses and community organizations. This class will provide the framework for how cities and communities can become smarter and more accessible with technology and more connected.

The biology of cells is examined with an emphasis on the relationship between organelle structure and function. Activity of the nucleus, cell structure, division and growth, and tools for studying genes will be discussed. Laboratory experiments are performed with isolated organelles or intact cells. Techniques include cell fractionation, bio-chemical assays, and DNA isolation and modification. Students will also read and analyze articles from scientific journals.

The primary focus of this course is to learn how to construct and use powerful spreadsheets for effective managerial decision-making. This course is mostly project- oriented with a dual focus on spreadsheet engineering and quantitative modeling of financial applications. Students will learn to develop powerful spreadsheet models and perform data analysis using Pivot Tables, VLookUp, Data Validation techniques and Sub Total functions. Students will also learn how to enhance spreadsheets by creating dashboards on financial data. The Visual Basic (macro) concepts will also be introduced to students. With the knowledge and hands-on experience of these concepts, students will be prepared to take on the challenges of the business world as it relates to working with spreadsheet modeling and data analysis.

In contemporary society, the media, including the Internet, television, smart phones, radio, magazines, movies, music, newspapers, and books, saturate our everyday lives to an extent unprecedented in human history. Their effects are wide-ranging and transformative, including affecting our perception of reality, influencing how and what we think about, and framing our understanding of the world around us. Yet, due to their pervasiveness, rarely do we seriously consider the media and the issues they raise. This course will introduce you to the seminal theories in media studies. By considering these different approaches, we will situate the media in a broader historical, social, political, and economic context to better understand their nature and their roles in (re)producing the (global) societies we live in. We will examine the structures, forces, and environments that produce media; we will analyze mediated texts and images and their roles in shaping our ideas, cultures, and identities; and, we will explore the different ways people actively engage in using and interpreting the media.

Topics include a comparison of information rich and information poor countries, an analysis of global media, trends in communication technology, the role of English as a world language, U.S. influences on world cultures, and international perceptions of the United States.

In the first half of the semester, we will trace the intellectual trajectory of international communication, covering international development and cultural imperialism. Fundamentals of Ecological Research is a hands-on course designed to teach students the basic concepts and methodologies used in the field of ecology. The significance of ecological research to current environmental issues, both local and global, will be stressed throughout the course.
