Community Genomes: using the example of Bauhinia Genome for genomics education. What is a genome project, and why are they important?
Unrestricted Use

Rating
0.0 stars

This genomics education lesson plan was formulated and tested on some year 6 students with the help of their teacher Michelle Pardini at the Hong Kong ICS School. Using the example of the ongoing citizen science Bahinia Genome project from Hong Kong it hopes to serve as a model to inspire and inform other national genome projects, and aid the development of crucial genomic literacy and skills across the globe. Inspiring and training a new generation of scientists to use these tools to tackle the biggest threats to mankind: climate change, disease, and food security. It is released under a CC-BY SA 4.0 license, and utilised the following slide deck and final quiz. Promoting open science, all of the data and resources produced from the project is immediately put into the public domain. Please feel free to utilise, adapt and build upon any of these as you wish. The open licence makes these open education resources usable just with attribution and posting of modified resources under a similar manner. Contact BauhiniaGenome if you have any questions or feedback.Bauhinia Genome overviewFor a slidedeck for the lesson plan laid out here you can use the set in slideshare here.

This lesson is an extension of LA lessons teaching compound words.  Once students are introduced to the concept of compound words, they will listen to a picture book and see if they can identify compound words from the book. Take time while reading to discuss the words.  You may consider making a chart as you read.  Be sure students understand that in a compound word, each word has a meaning, and when put together, the new word has a different meaning.

Compression: Crash Course Computer Science #21

So last episode we talked about some basic file formats, but what we didn’t talk about is compression. Often files are way too large to be easily stored on hard drives or transferred over the Internet - the solution, unsurprisingly, is to make them smaller. Today, we’re going to talk about lossless compression, which will give you the exact same thing when reassembled, as well as lossy compression, which uses the limitations of human perception to remove less important data. From listening to music and sharing photos, to talking on the phone and even streaming this video right now the ways we use the Internet and our computing devices just wouldn’t be possible without the help of compression.

This is a lesson plan designed for 3rd-5th graders that focuses on the core concepts of robots and what it takes to code them. Students build an understanding of algorithms and how to write a sequence of steps in order to accomplish a task. The lesson plan includes four vocabulary words that are regularly used in the lesson, a group Kahoot game to master these words, and instructions and handouts for a "code your friend" game where students get to pretend to be the robot.

The lesson takes 45 minutes.

Vocabulary:
Algorithm: a list of steps to finish a task
Program: an algorithm that has been coded into something that can be run by a machine
Bug: part of a program that does not work correctly
Debugging: finding and fixing problems in an algorithm or program

Standards:
3-5.DI.2 Develop a simple understanding of an algorithm (e.g., search, sequence of events, or
sorting) using computer-free exercises.

3-5.DI.1 Understand and use the basic steps in algorithmic problem solving (e.g., problem
statement and exploration, examination of sample instances, design, implementation, and
testing).

3-5.CD.2 Understand the pervasiveness of computers and computing in daily life (e.g., voicemail,
downloading videos and audio files, microwave ovens, thermostats, wireless Internet, mobile
computing devices, GPS systems).

In EARTH 801, you will develop skills in a programming language designed for visual arts and visualization while exploring Earth science topics. Specifically, you'll learn and practice digital graphics capabilities in order to render Earth science concepts that are otherwise difficult to visualize due to complicated space and time scales. Here, you will interact with large, open, freely-available data sets by collecting, plotting, and analyzing them using a variety of computational methods. You'll be ready to teach secondary school students a range of Next Generation Science Standard skills involving data collecting, manipulation, analysis, and plotting. You'll also read and discuss current research regarding the teaching, learning, and evaluation of visualization skills, as well as multiple external representations of science concepts.

Before keyboards, printers, even monitors there was processing. Processing is the reason computers are computers. Processing is the ability of the computer to take in raw data and basically make sense of it.

In this video we look at: Microprocessor (CPUs), Moore's Law, and Motherboard.

Today we start a three episode arc on the rise of a global telecommunications network that changed the world forever. We’re going to begin with computer networks, and how they grew from small groups of connected computers on LAN networks to eventually larger worldwide networks like the ARPANET and even the Internet we know today. We'll also discuss how many technologies like Ethernet, MAC addresses, IP Addresses, packet switching, network switches, and TCP/IP were implemented to new problems as our computers became ever-increasingly connected. Next week we’ll talk about the Internet, and the week after the World Wide Web!
