This textbook is designed for English literature and creative writing majors, especially those planning to transfer to a four-year institution. Our English 211 course also meets the Research and Writing requirement for Liberal Arts majors. One of my primary goals is to prepare you for the work you will do in upper-division literature courses. To accomplish this goal, we will do a substantial amount of reading and writing each week. We will explore literary analysis, a variety of theoretical approaches to literature, and some basic information on literary research. The culmination of this class will be a group-produced critical edition Pressbooks publication, Beginnings and Endings: A Critical Edition.

OER Philosophy and Use of Generative AI:
This text represents a collaboration, reuse, and sharing of others’ Creative Commons licensed content, including student work. As much as possible, I have tried to create a text with diverse perspectives and writing styles. I invite you to provide feedback as well as using, reusing, or remixing any of the materials in this text in accordance with the terms of their Creative Commons licenses.

As I was writing this textbook, ChatGPT and other new generative artificial intelligence technologies were introduced. I decided to explore how these tools could assist in developing content for OER. I also am experimenting with these tools in crafting assignments for students.

I acknowledge that ChatGPT does not respect the individual rights of authors and artists and ignores concerns over copyright and intellectual property in its training; additionally, I acknowledge that the system was trained in part through the exploitation of precarious workers in the global south. In this work I specifically used ChatGPT to assist me in outlining chapters, explaining basic terminology, drafting model essays, and creating student prompts. I have included links to the chats I used for this book in an appendix.

The casebook offers five reading units organized thematically around significant questions at issue. Reading Unit 1 grounds students in contemporary questions of science and its boundaries, offering a blend of dense and approachable readings intended to spark class conversations on the topic of scientific culture. Units 2 and 3 extend discourses on scientific culture into areas of critical analysis such as gender, race and ethnicity, religion, ethics, and colonialism, as well as examining issues of language and perception. Unit 4 focuses on basic questions of fact, definition, and interpretation by exploring the discourse surrounding anomalies, pseudoscience, and skepticism, making it particularly useful for reviewing and extending students’ understanding of skills learned in Writing 121. Finally, Unit 5 offers a case study on Frankenstein as a techno-moral lesson on overreaching ambition and how it applies to scientific culture today. While the Table of Contents is organized thematically, many readings have cross-unit (and cross-disciplinary) connections and relevance. We encourage instructors to make use of the Alternative Table of Contents and to feel welcome to assign the entire casebook in your courses and/or to use individual readings or units as launching points for individual and team research projects. The text’s title is meant to provoke some thoughts about why and how we write. What will academic writing look like in the age of generative AI? Though we will undoubtedly see some changes to the writing process, research supports the development of durable skills that courses like this one promote.

More important, with the rapid advancement of generative artificial intelligence, our writing processes are changing in fundamental ways that we will explore throughout the course. LLMs can be incredibly helpful, and they were designed to be that way. They were not designed to be truthful though. Critical thinking skills are more important than ever in the age of generative AI.

Cànan tro Òrain has a diverse array of lesson plans organized around Gaelic songs, some based on Canadian compositions and others on songs brought over from Scotland.
