This demonstration book is meant as an explanation and working example of the possibilities of making an online open textbook with the Jupyter books software. Jupyter books are made for the web. They incorporate many of the features we expect from modern websites, such as adaptive layout (readable on phones, tablets, and large computer screens), internal and external referencing, and adaptable formatting (separation of content and layout).
Besides some information on how to work with MarkDown, this book shows examples of different interactive elements, like graphs with sliders, applets, 3D interactive figures, embedded websites and a quiz.

Knowing Home: Braiding Indigenous Science with Western Science, Book 2

Short Description:
Knowing Home attempts to capture the creative vision of Indigenous scientific knowledge and technology that is derived from an ecology of a home place. The traditional wisdom component of Indigenous Science—the values and ways of decision-making—assists humans in their relationship with each other, the land and water, and all of creation. Indigenous perspectives have the potential to give insight and guidance to the kind of environmental ethics and deep understanding that we must gain as we attempt to solve the increasingly complex problems of the 21st century.NewParaBraiding Indigenous Science and Western Science is a metaphor used to establish a particular relationship. Linked by braiding, there is a certain reciprocity. Each strand remains a separate entity, but all strands come together to form the whole. When we braid Indigenous Science with Western Science we acknowledge that both ways of knowing are legitimate forms of knowledge.NewParaThe book provides a window into the vast storehouse of innovations and technologies of the Indigenous peoples who live in Northwestern North America. It is our hope that the Indigenous Science examples, research and curriculum models will inspire deep reflection regarding the under-representation of Aboriginal students in the sciences. It is intended that the rich examples and cases, combined with the resources listed in the appendices, will enable teachers and students to explore Indigenous Science examples in the classroom, and in addition, support the development of curriculum projects in home places.

Short Description:
This book aims to equip law clinic students with useful knowledge, skills, tips and know-how to make the most of their law clinic experience and how to develop important employability skills for future success, whether in the legal profession or related pursuits. By sharing professional and industry insights such as best practices and research results on the positive effects of practice-based learning techniques demonstrated by law students, the book aims to inform and benefit law students at any point of their clinic journey, irrespective of the type of clinical experience they engage in.

Long Description:
This book is firstly and foremostly a resource for law students undertaking a clinical activity during their law degree. It has been widely acknowledged that law students entering the competitive work environment can benefit significantly from practical work experience during their undergraduate or post-graduate studies. Whether gained through clinical education, external work experience or pro bono programs, the effect is to increase self-confidence, practical experience and, consequently the employability of students. It has also been recognised that extra-curricular community engagement enhances graduate employability by combining experiential learning, course work and community service. This book promotes the idea that not only is clinical experience an invaluable asset for students to enhance learning and to prepare them for practice, but it often has the added benefit of developing a sense of social responsibility in students gained by undertaking pro bono work.

Un demi-siècle au service de l'enseignement supérieur et de la recherche en Afrique

Long Description:

Long Description:
Welcome to Leadership in Early Care and Education! We hope you find this text helpful, thought provoking, and affirming. We created this text to support learning in a couple of different. This text can be used from start to finish, or as modules that you (the instructor or the student) select based on your learning outcomes.

We created this text with these principles in mind: Anyone can be a leader at any time. Leadership is not title specific and the field of Early Care and Education needs leaders from diverse background, experiences, and expertise. Leadership has an inherent set of responsibilities and leaders need to understand what those are and how to navigate them. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are important topics and leadership should be grounded in them. Reflection is a key part of professional practice and should be encouraged and supported at all levels. It is important to represent a variety of contexts, individuals and scenarios. White space is important. How we interact with learning materials is important. We hope you will find our design effective.

Leaders in Early Childhood Education and K-12 Education exist at levels and take many different paths to leadership. Some receive formal education and while many find themselves in leadership roles because they have the most tenure. Most become leaders through a combination of education and experience – and all are woefully underprepared for what they experience.

These modules were designed to empower leaders at all levels and in any educational context. We realize that is a lofty goal and we felt it was important to aspire to ensure that all leaders could see themselves in the scenarios and strategies we share. We have been in leadership roles and know how challenging and complex leadership in education can be.

Learners and Learning Module

As its title suggests, Learners and Learning is a module that addresses most directly the central, core business of schooling. The aim of the module is to improve the teaching abilities of teachers. It accordingly promotes a theoretically informed understanding of what learning is,how it takes place, and how teachers may go about organising systematic learning. The module enables teachers to analyse learning, and, in so doing, to reflect on what they can do to improve it. Thus, while the module draws on the learning theories of writers like Piaget and Vygotsky, it grounds these examples, practical exercises, and case studies drawn from schools.

Learning Analytics in Higher Education: A Practical Guide

Short Description:
The purpose of this project was to understand how postsecondary educators perceived the emergent technology of learning analytics and to create a best practices guide for those interested in implementing learning analytics at their institutions. To understand how different university stakeholders perceived the available metrics in a variety of learning management systems, we conducted an exploratory, mixed-methods study at a mid-sized Ontario university. Survey and focus group data were collected and analyzed to examine the perspectives of faculty instructors, students, administrators, and support staff of their familiarity and knowledge of learning analytics for teaching and learning, as well as their interpretations of graphic representations of student activity in LMSs. The findings suggest that educators recognize the potential of learning analytics for student support, report limited usability in current visualizations, and privacy and the ethics of using student data. It is hoped that this practical guide will assist users in going beyond superficial measures of course activity or incorrect interpretations of data to harness the power of learning analytic tools in teaching and learning in higher education.
