Thirty-five experienced and accomplished higher education leaders have come together to provide twenty-five essays on twelve topics about which all leaders, aspiring leaders and students of higher education should be informed. This is a labor of love, provided for free electronically, and there are no star turns here. Each essay is focused on providing the reader with advice based on wisdom acquired from lessons learned. Some topics covered include: beginning and completing a leadership position, responding to authority, establishing accountability, budget policy, long-term planning, affordability and student success, creating a safe community, fundraising, research funding, college athletics, and crisis management.

Short Description: Topic: Psychological theories and research to help you understand identity formation, motivation, and the importance of self-efficacy in teens and young adults. Additional background: This particular work is one part of the author’s undergraduate senior capstone project and is one of 11 in the series titled “Controlling the Narrative for Peace of Mind.” Seniors enrolled in Professor Erica Kleinknecht’s capstone seminar in the Spring of 2021 all used a core set of literature as a starting point and then they personalized the content to an area of their choosing. The work here reflects an integration and application of literatures in cognitive, applied cognitive, psycholinguistic fields of study, plus additional topic-specific content.
Long Description: This book is not about teaching students how to study better, or write better papers, or get better grades. Though studying techniques are important, there are other important things students can learn first to help themselves succeed in school. This book is for any parent, guardian, teacher, or counselor who has a student who finds school challenging and who could use some guidance. If you would like to know the research behind what struggling students are going through, and what they will need to succeed, this read is for you. This book gives a scientific explanation behind the workbook I created for high school and young adult students, entitled Helping Students Do Better Within a Broken System. The goal of the accompanying workbook is to empower struggling students and change their experience in school, to help them develop healthy and positive self-narratives. As a caring adult in a student’s life, you can give them the workbook to equip them with the mental tools they need to succeed in school and persevere through academic challenges. In the meantime, read this book to learn about the science behind the workbook activities, as well as the psychological theories and supporting research you should know to understand identity formation and motivation. While it is not in our power to make significant changes in the school system overall, it is in our power to learn about how we can understand, help, and support students who struggle within the broken system.

While the context of most of the chapters is the United States, there are also chapters with a Canadian context. It is also important to note that, as of the first half of 2021, the pandemic rages on, and mentions of COVID-19 in the following chapters will be reflective of the state of affairs in North America in the spring and fall of 2020.

A resource created by Deakin pre-service History teachers
Short Description: The teaching and learning activities in this book were designed by pre-service History teachers at Deakin University, Australia. The activities cover a wide range of topics from ancient history through to early twenty-first century history and are designed to develop students' historical thinking.
Long Description: Most learning and teaching activities that get created in initial teacher education courses never get seen again once they are assessed as part of an assignment. However, pre-service History teachers undertaking a Master of Teaching at Deakin University have created and shared some of the learning and teaching activities they designed as part of a renewable assignment. This Open Education Resource (OER) contains activities on ancient history, empires, twentieth century world history and even early twenty-first century history, with a focus on building historical thinking. It showcases their emerging content and pedagogical understanding as well as their capacity to engage with open pedagogy and design copyright compliant materials. Although the activities have been mostly designed around the curriculum requirements of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), they are easily adapted to fit other state and international curriculum contexts.

Long Description: In this PressBook, we explore the historical roots of holographic technology, how holograms work, the use of holographic technology in education, and the future of holographic technology in the field of education, instructional design and beyond. In the words of Dennis Gabor, the father of holography, “the future cannot be predicted, but futures can be invested” (p. 185). How true that statement would actually prove to be in the use of holographic technology for educational purposes throughout the world!

A Student-Generated Framework
Short Description: This work explores what humanizing learning is - and isn't - while centring student voices and the student experience. This is a resource meant for instructors, and is filled with quotes from students and instructors alike.NewParaThis project is made possible with funding by the Government of Ontario and through eCampusOntario’s support of the Virtual Learning Strategy. To learn more about the Virtual Learning Strategy visit: https://vls.ecampusontario.ca
Long Description: When students were asked what humanizing learning means to them, one student replied: “When instructors see us as people – unique, with different hopes and different stresses – and treat us as more than a number.” Another student said that it depended on the definition of humanize. In order to explore how we can humanize our courses, this work centres both student and instructor experiences – but note that this resource is not an instructor guide or a “how-to” list. It’s a way of thinking about humanizing learning by exploring key pillars that are important to students and instructors alike. It provides contextual practice ideas to humanize learning. It is not a list of best practices – as really, “best” actually refers to “contextual,” as best isn’t best for everyone. Students from the listening sessions repeatedly expressed how doing something is better than nothing, but also that in order to make this work meaningful, it needs to be iterative, be embedded throughout an instructor’s teaching practice and not present only once or twice in the term. So, consider as you explore this resource how some of these suggestions could become foundational pieces of your approach to teaching and learning.

There is a special focus on the importance of relationships which are essential in any learning, but especially online.

In a science methods course during the Covid19 pandemic, 51 future elementary teachers authored children's books and then read them aloud as part of a giving-back, service-learning activity as Open Educational Resources (OER). The 51 children's stories and their accompanying audiobooks aim to integrate STEM and the Arts to humanize science and scientific inquiry with history and philosophy of science in mind.
