Her Şey Bir Merhaba ile Başlar was developed for intermediate level Turkish language courses at the University of Texas at Austin. Intermediate learners and their instructors may use it for different purposes: self-study, classroom instruction, tutoring, or as a pastime. The lessons in Her Şey Bir Merhaba ile Başlar integrate reading, listening and viewing comprehension, writing and speaking practice, grammar, vocabulary, and cultural activities. Dozens of audio and video clips of Turkish speakers describing their lives, their culture, and their country support and enhance these activities. The Her Şey Bir Merhaba ile Başlar textbook, online interactive H5P exercises, and Youtube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOHyPBVzLiIwUFgXfxxkcvA) comprise a media-rich open educational resource (OER) developed by Dr. Jeannette Okur at the University of Texas at Austin and published by the Center for Open Educational Resources and Language Learning under the U.S. Department of Education Title VI Grant #P229A180003, with additional support from the UT Liberal Arts Instructional Technology Services and the UT Center for Middle Eastern Studies.

The goal of this course is to review grammar and develop vocabulary building strategies to refine oral and written expression. Speaking and writing assignments are designed to expand communicative competence. Assignments are based on models and materials drawn from contemporary media (newspapers and magazines, television, Web). The models, materials, topics and assignments vary from semester to semester.

The online book project was one of two components of the Sharing the Bounty project, funded by the ACM-EMKE. This online learning/teaching material is designed for undergraduate and graduate students (and anyone in the general public wanting to retain and improve proficiency in the language) who have already acquired some knowledge and grammar of the language. The new learning/teaching online material is content-based and in line with the Communicative Teaching Approach, and effort was made to employ as many authentic materials as possible. The online book is designed for Hindi students at the Intermediate Mid/High or Advanced Low levels according to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines. These materials were designed to improve all-around language skills, and also to incorporate various disciplines of the target country. Four developers (Lakhan Gusain, Rajiv Ranjan, Sunil Bhatt and Sungok Hong) worked on this project and produced 12 units that cover various aspects of India, such as the Indian diaspora, women’s empowerment, politics, pop culture, health, education, travel, and so on. Students will obtain linguistic and cultural proficiency by obtaining multilateral knowledge about the country through the online book.

This class explores the political and aesthetic foundations of hip hop. Students trace the musical, corporeal, visual, spoken word, and literary manifestations of hip hop over its 30 year presence in the American cultural imagery. Students also investigate specific black cultural practices that have given rise to its various idioms. Students create material culture related to each thematic section of the course. Scheduled work in performance studio helps students understand how hip hop is created and assessed.

This course explores artistic achievement in a culture that over the past century has engaged in constant and intense imaginative self-renewal. The class studies film, narrative (e.g., Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude), and poetry. Conducted in Spanish.

This resource was designed for a student interested in learning about Hispanic Civilization and Culture, and it may be especially interesting to a student of the Spanish language, however, no Spanish language knowledge is required. Nonetheless, there will be some opportunities to learn some language basics as language and culture are closely related.It is intended as a one-semester college-level course.The content is practical, authentic and engaging, but more importantly, it allows students to acquire much more than the basics of Hispanic Civilization and Culture.

This open textbook is designed primarily for teacher candidates in Queen’s University’s Faculty of Education enrolled FOUN 102: Historical and Philosophical Foundations of Education. By using this open textbook to support learning in the course, we hope to free students from the costs of textbooks (and of the challenge of receiving textbooks in the midst of this global pandemic) and create a space that permits bounded exploration of what it means to think, live, and breathe philosophy and history in the multiverse that is education. This course introduces students to prominent voices in these topics across fields. Alongside readings introducing students to this broad scholarly terrain, the course offers guidance in research and writing for publication based on the reality that PhD candidates on the job market need to be published authors, and that every term paper has the potential to be a journal article. We work towards publication by reading widely-cited scholarly histories both for their content and for what they can tell us about scholarly craft.

This course focuses on one particular aspect of the history of computing: the use of the computer as a scientific instrument. The electronic digital computer was invented to do science, and its applications range from physics to mathematics to biology to the humanities. What has been the impact of computing on the practice of science? Is the computer different from other scientific instruments? Is computer simulation a valid form of scientific experiment? Can computer models be viewed as surrogate theories? How does the computer change the way scientists approach the notions of proof, expertise, and discovery? No comprehensive history of scientific computing has yet been written. This seminar examines scientific articles, participants’ memoirs, and works by historians, sociologists, and anthropologists of science to provide multiple perspectives on the use of computers in diverse fields of physical, biological, and social sciences and the humanities. We explore how the computer transformed scientific practice, and how the culture of computing was influenced, in turn, by scientific applications.

To study MIT is to study the modern world. In 2016, MIT celebrated the 100th anniversary of the move from Boston to Cambridge; therefore, this course examines the history of the Institute through the lens of the history of science and technology, and vice-versa. This course examines the history of MIT through the lens of the broader history of science and technology, and vice versa. The course covers the founding of MIT in 1861 and goes through the present, including such topics as William Barton Rogers, educational philosophy, biographies of MIT students and professors, intellectual and organizational development, the role of science, changing laboratories and practices, and MIT’s relationship with Boston, the federal government, and industry. History of Media and Technology addresses the mutually influential histories of communications media and technological development, focusing on the shift from analog to digital cultures that began mid-century and continues to the present.
