This webinar will introduce how to use the Open Science Framework (OSF; https://osf.io) in a Classroom. The OSF is a free, open source web application built to help researchers manage their workflows. The OSF is part collaboration tool, part version control software, and part data archive. The OSF connects to popular tools researchers already use, like Dropbox, Box, Github and Mendeley, to streamline workflows and increase efficiency. This webinar will discuss how to introduce reproducible research practices to students, show ways of tracking student activity, and introduce the use of Templates and Forks on the OSF to allow students to easily make new class projects. The OSF is the flagship product of the Center for Open Science, a non-profit technology start-up dedicated to improving the alignment between scientific values and scientific practices. In this video segment adapted from the Yukon River Panel, visit fishing communities along the Yukon River and see how Alaska Native peoples exercise stewardship of salmon to ensure that it remains a central food source and cultural touchstone.

The goal of these resources is to give a bird's eye view of the developments in open scientific research. That is, we cover both social developments (e.g. the culture in various communities) as well as technological ones. As such, no part of the contents are especially in-depth or geared towards advanced users of specific practices or tools. Nevertheless, certain sections are more relevant to some people than to others. Specifically:

The most interesting sections for graduate students will be about navigating the literature, managing evolving projects, and publishing and reviewing.
Lab technicians may derive the most benefit from the sections about capturing data, working with reproducibility in mind and sharing data.
For data scientists, the sections on organizing computational projects as workflows, managing versions of data and source code, open source software development, and data representation will be most relevant.
Principal investigators may be most interested in the sections on data management, data sharing, and coping with evolving projects.
Scientific publishers may be interested to know how scientists navigate the literature, what the expectations are for enhanced publications, and the needs for data publishing.
Science funders and policy makers may easily find value in the capturing data, data management, data sharing and navigating the literature.
Science communicators may be more interested in exploring the content by starting with navigating the literature, working with reproducibility in mind and sharing data.

This toolbox highlights many different Thinking Routines - patterns by which teachers and students operate and go about the job of learning and working together in a classroom environment.

Thinking routines can be thought of as any procedure, process, or pattern of action that is used repeatedly to facilitate the accomplishment of specific goals or tasks. Classrooms have routines that serve to manage student behavior and interactions, to organize the work of learning, and to establish rules for communication and discourse.

7th Grade Math Teacher Chris McCloud from the School of the Future in New York gives us a new idea on how to call on students and ensure participation. McCloud tapes 1 playing card on each student desk and has the same set of playing cards in his hand. Throughout a lesson, Chris flips a card to determine which students is going to answer a question. If students cannot answer the question, he does'nt allow them to say "I don't know." Instead, he requires the student to share where they are stuck and flips the next card to see if someone can help the student who is stuck.

This video segment adapted from the NOW-RAMP 2002 Expedition documents a research expedition to Pearl and Hermes Atoll in Hawai`i. Watch as biologists assess the bird and plant populations and then work to eradicate invasive species.

In this classroom activity, students measure the energy use of various appliances and electronics and calculate how much carbon dioxide (CO2) is released to produce that energy.

Let’s start with an inescapable fact: you’ll be writing and communicating for the rest of your life whether you’re a second grade teacher, a corrections officer, an ER nurse, or a district manager at Target. You don’t want to sound like an idiot on paper or in person. People lose interviews, jobs, and respect when they write or communicate poorly. Simply put, developing effective writing and speaking skills can help you succeed far beyond the classroom.

This handbook is the product of much collaboration. In creating this resource, the faculty at KCC have attempted to distill their collective wisdom about writing and present that material in a concise and accessible way. This is by no means a complete reference for every English question you might encounter in your life; however, it is a collection of common issues and areas of concern that professors across all disciplines address.

This response-cost strategy is appropriate for younger students who are verbally defiant and non-compliant with the teacher. (See the related Hints for Using... column for tips on how to tailor this intervention idea for older students.)

Some students thrive on peer attention-and will do whatever they have to in order to get it. These students may even attempt intentionally to irritate their classmates in an attempt to be noticed. When students bother others to get attention, though, they often find themselves socially isolated and without friends. In addition, teachers may discover that they must surrender valuable instructional time to mediate conflicts that were triggered by students seeking negative peer attention.
Positive Peer Reporting is a clever classwide intervention strategy that was designed to address the socially rejected child who disrupts the class by seeking negative attention. Classmates earn points toward rewards for praising the problem student. The intervention appears to work because it gives the rejected student an incentive to act appropriately for positive attention and also encourages other students to note the target student's good behaviors rather than simply focusing on negative actions. Another useful side effect of positive peer reporting is that it gives all children in the classroom a chance to praise others-a useful skill for them to master! The Positive Peer Reporting strategy presented here is adapted from Ervin, Miller, & Friman (1996).

Teachers face clashes each day. These are of denials and dejection. The classrooms have been failing to keep the children attentive and dedicated to the instructions. The participation in co-curricular and extra-curricular has declined across the institutions. There was a time when we saw, not just huge numbers but, an immense amount of enthusiasm for cultural and literary events. Now. people who are at the helm of affairs are getting passive; they have actually got trapped in a vicious circle of academic duties.

Students know the worth of participation as it gets them certificates and points for jobs. There was a time when participation was selfless and the belonging was quite visible. Teachers and Students were mad about doing their best and the outcome was a healthy competition. As event management team volunteers, anchors, and announcers, we Learned to Learn. And the by-products of that learning have come automatically in the form of careers and recognised versatility at the workplace.

As teachers, we often put our students' needs before our own. However, it is important to prioritize our mental wellness to be our best selves both in and out of the classroom. In this activity, we will explore the concept of mental wellness, learn practical strategies to manage stress and maintain a healthy work-life balance, and reflect on how we can prioritize our mental wellness moving forward.

Private Practice Basics is a training program that all team members must regularly undergo to maintain functional literacy. Among others, functional literacy measures your ability to manage information: obtaining information and synthesizing information (Institute of Medicine, 2004). This resource is a multistep problem solving task involving noticing patterns. I use this in my classroom at the beginning of the year to break problem solving down into manageable steps. Students are asked to read the problem, highlight the question, take notes on the important information and make a checklist of what they need to solve the problem, a box to organize the steps they take to solve it, and an answer box. I share this resource on our LMS, Seesaw, and also ask the students to record an explanation of their work at the end.

Having been a project manager for over a decade—and having taught hundreds of classes and workshops on project management—I wanted a textbook that would be:Designed for a “flipped” classroom structure. A textbook with short and concise readings with appropriate videos embedded. A student workbook for taking notes while reading so students are ready to work on exercises in class, instead of listening to a lecture that repeats, or tries to clarify, a complicated textbook.Accessible to my students, and not bogged down with academic language or irrelevant research. Something that would provide students with a good introduction to basic vocabulary and concepts without using a lot of technical language.Granular, so that each section would focus on one topic and just that topic. This way, instructors can assign just the sections or chapters they want and not be worried that students will get sidetracked with material that the instructor doesn’t want to focus on in their course.Focused on the essentials of project management. There is a lot to learn in project management, but with a good understanding of the essentials, students can learn advanced concepts and the “exceptions to the rules” on their own.
