From Seedlings to Success: How One State’s Funding of OER Projects Helped to Launch OER Initiatives Across Multiple Campuses

In 2018, the Alabama Commission on Higher Education (ACHE) and the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) launched an OER grant program to help lower the cost of higher education. This experimental study, which involved over 18,000 students and generated a cost savings of over $2,000,000, raised awareness among faculty and staff of the many advantages of using OER. Subsequently, in response to multiple requests for Creative Commons (CC) training, the partners launched a second grant program with the intention to train-the-trainer, whereby multiple institutions statewide would have a resident expert on OER and CC licensing. As a result of the two large grant programs and some smaller programs funded by ACHE, the state has fostered numerous OER champions who have launched some innovative initiatives on their campuses. During this session, attendees will learn about the successes and challenges that ACHE and ACCS experienced when launching the programs, and they will receive detailed information about some of the activities going on at two of Alabama’s public institutions, the University of Montevallo and the University of North Alabama.

Fundamentals of Biology focuses on the basic principles of biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, and recombinant DNA. These principles are necessary to understanding the basic mechanisms of life and anchor the biological knowledge that is required to understand many of the challenges in everyday life, from human health and disease to loss of biodiversity and environmental quality.
Course Format

This course has been designed for independent study. It consists of four units, one for each topic. The units can be used individually or in combination. The materials for each unit include:

Learning activities, including Interactive Concept Quizzes, designed to reinforce main concepts from lectures.
Problem Sets you do on your own and check your answers against the Solutions when you’re done.

Almost all Anatomy and Physiology course require the student have a basic level of chemistry knowledge. Lesson 02 Chemistry covers the basics of inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, and nutrition that most A&P student need to make it through the course.

In the Future of Electric Transportation Design Challenge - a soup-to-nuts curriculum toolkit from Construct - you'll ask young people to find new and novel ways to increase use & equitable access to electric vehicles.

This comprehensive toolkit is intended for classroom teachers and other educators interested in running a multi-week or full-term design challenge with students. The guide is written with 8th-9th graders as a target grade level, however this curriculum could easily be adapted for both older and younger students: 5th-12th grade.

An optional feature in this challenge experience is to have students submit their design briefs (anonymously from their teacher) for the opportunity to be recognized by Construct and Industry Leaders interested in their concepts!

A teacher running this Transportation Design Challenge could connect it to multiple standards at multiple grade-levels in multiple subject areas.

Construct has facilitated several cohort-based challenges for middle and high school students, using this toolkit, and we are excited to be able to provide this curriculum at no charge to any interested teachers.

Understanding geologic time is a core idea in science that has deep connections to other areas of geology (e.g.,
plate tectonics), biology (e.g., evolution), and astronomy (e.g., planetary science). The topic, however, is
challenging for students to understand because of enormous timescale of the Earth. Therefore, students need to
make sense of the 4.6 billion year history of Earth as well as the history of life on Earth. This requires an
understanding of the depositional environments that create rock strata for us to read, relative dating ideas such
as the principle of superposition and the use of index fossils, and absolute dating techniques such as radiometric
dating. Taken together, these topics provide students not only an understanding of the history of the Earth, but
an understanding of how we have pieced this history together with multiple forms of evidence.
