Designing a Tunnel: An Earth Science Design Challenge

After teaching a unit about rocks and minerals, students are challenged with picking a site for a tunnel, drilling through a mountain with clay, reinforcing the hole to create a tunnel, and then testing their design. Students will also estimate and calculate the amount of time it takes them to drill.

Family Night: Engineering introduces children to cool careers within the field of engineering that range from building roller coasters to designing artificial heart pumps for children who need them. Students will learn the basics of 3D modeling utilizing SketchUp Pro. Students first begin by observing the most unique building structures in the world. Then learn new skills and techniques through hands-on tutorials to learn how to create 3D models in SketchUp. Once armed with the basics, students will be tasked with creating a 3D replica of a building of their choice or one from their imagination.
