During World War Two, a fierce battle between American and Japanese forces on Kwajalein atoll left a trail of debris on the deep lagoon floor. This lagoon now has one of the largest collections of well-preserved aircraft in the world. In this video, as part of the first ever film crew allowed onto this secret military base, Jonathan explores a B-25, F4-U Corsair and Dauntless dive bomber still sitting on the bottom of the ocean, as if ready to take off. Once the pride of the German Navy, this 700 foot long heavy cruiser was used by the U.S. as a test target for not one but two atom bombs at Bikini atoll. Today, at the bottom of the ocean, the radiation levels of the Prinz Eugen are low enough for safe exploration. In this video, Jonathan joins historian Mark Miller on a trip to explore this mysterious shipwreck. What they find about the condition of this wreck is surprising. Students will draw comparisons between approaches to resistance across identities and experiences.

Japanese Americans suffered terrible injustices as a result of governmental policies during World War II that discriminated against them by treating them like enemies. In this lesson, students examine what happened to Japanese Americans during WWII, what constitutional rights were violated in the process, and why such a massive injustice happened.

This module consists of a detailed examination of the critical period in Japanese history from the end of the Pacific War through the U.S. Occupation between 1945 and 1952 and recovery in the 1960s and beyond. The lectures and seminars examine the following topics:

Japan’s Road to War
The Japanese experience of war and defeat
The A-bomb in history and memory
The ‘Allied’ Occupation of Japan
The changing Japanese family
Japan’s economic recovery in the 1950s and 60s
The environmental costs of rapid economic development
The Asia-Pacific War in Japanese memory and popular culture

Dr. Townsend is Associate Professor of Japanese history in the School of History, University of Nottingham. She has published on Japanese intellectual history, including Yanaihara Tadao and Japanese Colonial Policy: Redeeming Empire (Curzon, 2000) and her most recent monograph Miki Kiyoshi 1897-1945: Japan’s Itinerant Philosopher (Brill, 2009). She is now developing a major collaborative project entitled Motor Cities: A Comparative History of Nagoya, Japan and Birmingham, England in the Twentieth Century in association with the University of Leicester, Birmingham City University and Nagoya University. A major focus of the project is the role of the motorcar and the automotive industry in city-centre design and regional development.

This workshop presents selected primary sources from the
Rockefeller Foundation holdings at the Rockefeller Archive
Center. This collection is intended for use in facilitating a
classroom exercise on the Rockefeller Foundation’s
1933-1945 refugee scholar program. The exercise asks
students to consider what foundations can do in times
of global crisis by placing them in the role of Rockefeller
Foundation (RF) program officers during World War II. As
were the real program officers, students will be tasked with
selecting a limited number of scholar applicants for aid in a
life-threatening situation. Working in groups, students will
read documents related to ten scholars who represent
a variety of nationalities, backgrounds, and scholarly
disciplines. Students will then select four candidates, and
must be prepared to articulate the reasoning behind their
decisions. This exercise enables students to imagine and
grapple with the difficult choices RF officials had to make in
one historical example of how foundation philanthropy has
responded to humanitarian crisis. Students are encouraged
to use this exercise as a springboard for further research
into current scholar rescue initiatives, and/or policies
and practices pertaining to refugees today.

A Sharkwreck Mystery

In this video, filmed thirty miles off the coast of North Carolina, there is a shipwreck on the bottom, 130 feet down. Swarming around the wreck are dozens of Sand Tiger sharks. They look menacing, but they seem to be very docile. What are they all doing there, in one spot? That's what Jonathan wants to find out. Using a variety of filming techniques, Jonathan attempts to discover the secrets of the Sand Tiger shark gatherings at the wrecks, and does the first ever night dive with these shark..talk about scary! Understanding Political Change in Ghana through Sources

This assignment asks students to engage with different primary sources and perspectives to understand political change in the Gold Coast between World War II and 1950. Through close readings of documents, students can recognize how historical events, in this case, the experience of the Second World War and the Accra riots of 1948, transformed what was politically possible in the context of the Gold Coast. Students should see that national independence and the establishment of Ghana as a nation state were far from inevitable in the late 1940s as different actors, on the ground in the Gold Coast and from the vantage of the colonial government, negotiated changing expectations and aspirations.

Professor Cynthia Marsh, Professor of Russian Drama and Literature, Department of Russian and Slavonic Studies

Professor Cynthia Marsh began the study of Russian after leaving school, by taking an intensive course to A-level at the then Holborn College of Law, Languages and Commerce, in Central London. She then went on to gain BA hons Russian (first class) at the University of Nottingham and spent a year at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University of London, completing an MA Area Studies: Russia, before going on to full time research there on the relationship between poetry and painting in the work of the Russian poet Max Voloshin. This research culminated in a PhD, entitled M.A.Voloshin: Artist-Poet: A investigation into the synaesthetic aspects of his poetry (awarded in 1979.)

In 1972, after teaching Russian literature part-time on the University of London External BA honours course at Holborn, Professor Cynthia Marsh was appointed as a lecturer at Nottingham, and subsequently appointed senior lecturer and then Professor of Russian Drama and Literature. She served as head of department of Russian and Slavonic Studies from 2005-2006, and then from 2007- 2009.

In 2002 she was awarded a Lord Dearing Award for Outstanding Teaching by the University and subsequently became a Member of the Higher Education Academy. She currently teaches modules on Russian theatre and Russian drama and her research interests continue to focus on Russian theatre, publishing mainly on Chekhov and Gorky.
