"Lung cancer is the number one cause of cancer-related death Early detection is key to beating the disease A lung tumour that’s detected early, before it grows too large or spreads to other parts of the body, can be removed by surgeons and essentially cured The problem is that early detection is tricky Most patients don’t develop symptoms until advanced disease has set in, and the most common screening methods can be expensive and impractical Scientists are working on a new blood test that could help The test can spot small bits of DNA floating around in the blood Cancer cells shed this DNA as they grow and multiply Preliminary tests in mice showed the test can detect lung tumours before they become malignant The amount of tumour DNA found in the blood went up as tumours grew, giving scientists an idea of how large a mass had become More work is needed before the test can be used to detect cancer in humans But the research suggests that spotting early-stage lung cancer may one day be.."

"Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally. Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors (TKIs) are a common treatment for lung cancer, but TKI resistance is widespread. TKI treatment also has serious side effects like hair loss, anemia, and hypothyroidism, meaning it is important to identify which patients will benefit from the treatment. MicroRNAs may be a way to do that. MicroRNAs regulate gene expression by blocking transcription or promoting the breakdown of messenger RNA, and because microRNAs are stable in body fluids, they can be particularly useful as diagnostic or prognostic indicators in many applications. In the context of anti-cancer drugs, microRNAs are frequently directly involved in the cellular response. Profiling their expression could be used to predict the response to anti-cancer drugs like TKIs. The research to date has described numerous microRNAs and their roles in TKI response by lung cancer cells. However, most previous research did not measure microRNAs in serum samples..."

"A new diagnostic algorithm could lead to earlier and more accurate diagnosis of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, a life-threatening hematopoietic stem cell disorder. Early diagnosis of PNH is essential to avoid serious, potentially fatal outcomes, but timely identification is complicated by the condition’s rarity and the non-specificity of the attendant symptoms. To address this gap, a committee of PNH experts developed an algorithm for screening and diagnosis based on consensus from physicians with real-world experience in treating the disorder. The result should help non-specialists derive an appropriate differential diagnosis. A handful of core signs and symptoms form the foundation of the algorithm. These include symptoms of anemia, such as fatigue, tachycardia, shortness of breath, and headache; thrombotic events; dark-colored urine; intermittent abdominal pain; esophageal spasms; and dysphagia..."
