This online course is designed to help anyone teach – and learn – with a 21st century approach to knowledge and teaching. Lesson 1 of the course shares important evidence we now have about the working of the brain, that is meaningful for all subjects and ages – and lives. We then move to thinking together about the data filled world in which we live, to prepare students for their future in a world of data.
The aim of a data science approach is not to add new standards or content to your teaching, it is about interacting with your content in a data science way – that is fun, interesting and creative. In the course you will experience lessons that you can take and use with your students, and you will see lots of classroom and lesson examples. Whether you are a kindergarten teacher, a high school history or maths teacher, an administrator or parent, or someone just curious about data science, there will be ideas for you.

The purpose of activity reflections is to encourage graduate students to become involved in academic and professional communities. By engaging in their field of study outside of the classroom environment, they are able to: introduce themselves in different situations, build academic and professional relationships, connect issues that they learn in the classroom to current discourse, and use reflection techniques to refine their academic and professional goals.  Created by Steven Harris-Scott, Ph.D., and Amy Lewis, Ed.D., for INTO George Mason University with support from Mason 4-VA.

This curriculum is designed to educate social workers about the experiences and needs of families involved with both public welfare and child welfare services so that they can provide high-quality case management services within a post-welfare reform environment. Based on research from a longitudinal, ethnographic study of families living in an urban environment, the curriculum includes: a review of child welfare outcomes in the welfare reform era; a description of welfare reform as implemented in one county, including examples from the client's perspective of managing within a welfare-to-work environment; a cost of living analysis of life on welfare; a set of case examples illustrating pathways from welfare to child welfare, with special attention to aspects of welfare reform which may play a role in child welfare outcomes; and a discussion of how to apply qualitative research methods toward improving child welfare practice, as well as an explanation of the research methods used for the study.
