The 12th grade learning experience consists of 7 mostly month-long units aligned to the Common Core State Standards, with available course material for teachers and students easily accessible online. Over the course of the year there is a steady progression in text complexity levels, sophistication of writing tasks, speaking and listening activities, and increased opportunities for independent and collaborative work. Rubrics and student models accompany many writing assignments.Throughout the 12th grade year, in addition to the Common Read texts that the whole class reads together, students each select an Independent Reading book and engage with peers in group Book Talks. Language study is embedded in every 12th grade unit as students use annotation to closely review aspects of each text. Teacher resources provide additional materials to support each unit.

This project unit—a multimedia self-portrait published in digital form—is the capstone of your students' high school careers. It is a chance for them to pause and reflect on where they've been, where they're going, and who they are as a person. Students will reflect on what they want others to know about them: what they want their message to be and what types of media they might use to convey that message. Students will have the opportunity to express themselves in many different formats—through writing, of course, but also through other media of their choosing. Students will be able to convey your message through visual art, photography, a graphic novel, audio, poetry, or video—practically any type of media they want!

BENCHMARK ASSESSMENT: Cold Read

During this unit, on a day of your choosing, we recommend you administer a Cold Read to assess students’ reading comprehension. For this assessment, students read a text they have never seen before and then respond to multiple-choice and constructed-response questions. The assessment is not included in this course materials.

What does a multimedia memoir look like? Students will continue to explore website-creation or portfolio platforms they can use to create and publish their self-portrait. They’ll take a close look at a multimedia story to examine its features and plan the media they will use to express their own work.

This resource is to introduce the research process, how to find relevant information, and how to compile a varied source list for your argumentative essay. The second portion focuses on thesis statement/claim crafting, outlining, introductions and conclusion drafting.

Are your students struggling to create visually-organized speech outlines? This GoogleDocs handout demonstrates Harvard outline formatting, the most common type of outlining used in public speaking. It explains and demonstrates formatting expectations for: speech sections, main points, transitions, sub-points. It also offers advice about: indentation and symbolization, the principle of division in outlining, how to adjust your numbering scheme in GoogleDocs and Microsoft Word, spacing. Finally, it offers two student outline examples for clarity.

This worksheet reviews two types of story structure: the Three Act Structure and Freytag’s Pyramid. Space is provided to help you map your story out in both structures to decide which best fits your writing style.

Students will correctly key specific documents that have previously been taught by using a simulation provided from a Computer Applications and Keyboarding textbook. This lesson is not specific to a particular textbook, however, the example provided is from the Century 21 Computer Applications and Keyboarding Textbook, 8th edition. Simulations give students a real-world practice and by adding project management techniques, students can practice working together to complete a long assignment. The class should be divided into teams of 3-4 students. They will choose a group leader and then complete the person responsible column on the provided pdf handout. Students should assess the qualities that each bring to the table and use that to their advantage. Once this has been done, they should decide on the due date for each job and list the date in the completed column and, finally, who will be editing/proofreading the document before the group leader submits for grading. Students are allowed to use their notes and the FBLA format guide, which can be found on the FBLA-PBL.org website, for this project.
