In this lesson, students are introduced to trees and the many things we commonly use that come from trees. Includes introductory movement activity, guided discussion, a matching game, and fun facts.

Materials: "Apples to Oregon" book and three paper lunch bags labled: wood, food, cellulose.

Students will examine how patriotism comes in many forms through an analysis of the short film "Patriotism and Protest." In the film, experts and Minidoka survivors highlight how the infamous "loyalty questionnaire" during WWII divided the Japanese American community.   

Students will examine how language shapes public perception through an analysis of the short film "Power of Words." In the film, experts highlight the various euphemisms used by the US government to describe the WWII incarceration of Japanese Americans and how the language used to describe this event did not match the reality.

Four lesson plans developed by the Coquille Tribe of Oregon for fourth-grade students.
Lessons include:
1) People Groups - This lesson will give students a foundational aware- ness of the Indigenous, sovereign people groups who live in what is now known as Oregon—their history, their culture, and the issues that continue to impact them today. When undertaking the study of Indigenous people, it is important to begin with their long history on the land. Indige- nous people have lived in Oregon for thousands of years, in established communities, with estab- lished social structures, languages, and cultures. They were—and are—deeply and inextricably connected to the land.
2) Sea Otters - In this lesson, students will learn about the import- ant role of the sea otter in the history and tradi- tional life of the Coquille Indian Tribe. They will also learn about the long-term impact the European fur trade had on the population of this magnificent creature and how the sea otter’s virtual extinction damaged the ecosystem of the Oregon Coast. Stu- dents will then learn how to identify and diagram the sea otter’s internal and external structures (i.e., the organization of the inside and outside body parts that form a living thing) and describe how the purpose of these structures supports sea otter survival. Finally, students will create an educational poster or pamphlet that provides an overview of the sea otter and its impact on the traditional life of the Coquille Indian Tribe.
3) History of the Coquille Indian Tribe - This lesson will give students a general knowl- edge of the history, ancestral territory, and traditional lifeways of the Coquille Indian Tribe. Working in groups, students will use maps, make predictions, and participate in a close reading of
a written text that allows them to check their pre- dictions. The text provides other interesting facts about the Tribe, which should provide informa- tion and generate questions that can guide their learning in subsequent lessons about the Coquille Indian Tribe.
4) Coastal Lifeways - The Coquille Indian Tribe flourished on Oregon’s southwestern coast for thousands of years in a homeland encompassing more than a million acres. The Tribe’s ancestral and modern lands of interest include significant portions of Oregon’s Coos, Curry, Douglas, Jackson, Josephine, and Lane counties. The Coquille traditional lifeways are deeply tied to the coastal environment. This lesson provides students with the opportunity to gain specific knowledge about important elements of the Coquille coastal lifeways.

Students will learn about the water cycle, watersheds, and specifically, the watershed that feeds Springfield, Oregon. After analyzing drought maps, reading news reports, and seeing images and videos, students will realize that drought is a real life concern. Students, as concerned citizens, will create a water collection device, at first on a small scale, and then a true to life water collection system to help re- purpose rainwater in our garden area.

In the Future of Electric Transportation Design Challenge - a soup-to-nuts curriculum toolkit from Construct - you'll ask young people to find new and novel ways to increase use & equitable access to electric vehicles.

This comprehensive toolkit is intended for classroom teachers and other educators interested in running a multi-week or full-term design challenge with students. The guide is written with 8th-9th graders as a target grade level, however this curriculum could easily be adapted for both older and younger students: 5th-12th grade.

An optional feature in this challenge experience is to have students submit their design briefs (anonymously from their teacher) for the opportunity to be recognized by Construct and Industry Leaders interested in their concepts!

A teacher running this Transportation Design Challenge could connect it to multiple standards at multiple grade-levels in multiple subject areas.

Construct has facilitated several cohort-based challenges for middle and high school students, using this toolkit, and we are excited to be able to provide this curriculum at no charge to any interested teachers.

Student groups will learn about symbols of art, heritage, history, and cultural practices from the Celebrate Oregon! license plate image. 

Designed to be taught after Grade 2 Lesson 2 (Part One), in Part Two, student groups from Part One of the lesson will teach the rest of the class about their symbol from the Celebrate Oregon! license plate and what it stands for.

By using maps, students will work in groups to learn about Native American tribes and languages in history and in the current day. This lesson prepares students for Part 2, when they will teach the other students what they learned through giving creative presentations.  

In this two-part lesson, students will learn about four often hidden figures in Oregon history with a focus on justice and representation of Indigenous people and, Black, Chicano, and Chinese Oregonians. Then, students will build a class storyboard to share a visual history of what they find most interesting and important about the people they have learned about.This is designed as a two-part lesson, with content in lesson 1 offering a foundation for lesson 2.  They are designed to be taught together although lesson 1 could be a standalone lesson.

In this two-part lesson, students will learn about Agnes Baker Pilgrim, who, before her death at the age of 95, was the oldest living member of the Takelma Tribe in Oregon. Through her story as an Indigenous woman, students will learn about stigma and discrimination in Oregon history as well as the current day. They will also identify things that they can do to help fight against discrimination when they see it or experience it.This is designed as a two-part lesson with content in Lesson 1 offering a foundation for Lesson 2.  The lessons are designed to be taught together while although each could be standalone if preferred.

Through learning about the lives of an abolitionist and a suffragist from Oregon’s history, students will identify ways that real people fought for their rights and ways that people fight against injustice every day, highlighting that in every place and time, people have fought for their rights and freedom.
