In planning this history lesson, determine if you want to cover this material in one or two class periods. The lesson focuses on Abraham Lincoln as a man and as a leader during the Civil War. The reading paragraphs have pictures and Word Banks to help students grasp the main ideas of the lesson. This lesson covers more advanced vocabulary than beginners will know, but it is not critical that the students produce every new word. The goal is to engage the students in the topic and help them learn the general knowledge included in the test items. For example, in the paragraph on the Lincoln Memorial, the students do not need to retain the information about the construction and historical use of the memorial. These details are introduced in order to demonstrate that even years after his death, Americans still honor Lincoln’s leadership in significant ways. Covers civics test items 60, 72, 74, 75, and 100.

This phonics program was developed to serve students with diverse educational backgrounds, with a specific focus on refugees. One of the challenges in working with refugees is that, unlike international students, they come to English classes with huge variation in educational experience. Some students may have finished high school or have a college degree, while others may not have ever picked up a pencil before. The goal of this program is to provide a bridge for those students with limited literacy skills so that they are able to move on to a more traditional beginning ESL class. There are a number of assumptions about academic skills made in most English language classrooms, even at a beginning level. As a result, teachers and students alike become frustrated when those expectations are confounded.

This interactive tool below shows how the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) Language and Cognitive skill domain items align to both the Australian Curriculum (English and Maths) and the National Literacy and Numeracy Learning Progressions (NLNLP). This tool is based on AERO's AEDC item analysis, which connected the sequence of skill progression to the Australian Curriculum (English and mathematics) and the NLNLP. The complexity of AEDC items builds across the tool from left to right signalling an increase in the difficulty of mastering the item skill for students. You can use this tool to review student skill progression and help consider what ‘next steps’ can be taken to best support further development, in alignment with your teaching program and practice. You can identify the AEDC items students have achieved, and then follow links to the corresponding Australian Curriculum and NLNLP information.
