The course begins with the basics of compressible fluid dynamics, including governing equations, thermodynamic context and characteristic parameters. The next large block of lectures covers quasi-one-dimensional flow, followed by a discussion of disturbances and unsteady flows. The second half of the course comprises gas dynamic discontinuities, including shock waves and detonations, and concludes with another large block dealing with two-dimensional flows, both linear and non-linear.

As students learn about the creation of biodomes, they are introduced to the steps of the engineering design process, including guidelines for brainstorming. Students learn how engineers are involved in the design and construction of biodomes and use brainstorming to come up with ideas for possible biodome designs. This lesson is part of a series of six lessons in which students use their growing understanding of various environments and the engineering design process, to design and create their own model biodome ecosystems.

Although studying microbial functions in these incredibly diverse communities was once difficult, new approaches are making it easier. One such approach, metaproteomics, enables scientists to study changes in the expression of microbial proteins over space and time and provides important insights into gene-protein links and microbial functions. The new Metaproteomics Initiative seeks to establish a central hub for the discussion, standardization, and improvement of metaproteomics methods in order to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and advancement of this relatively new field of microbiome research. This initiative, sponsored by the European Proteomics Association, will feature a website, a social media presence, and various platforms and resources for education and communication..."

"Underground organisms are critical to supporting plant life above the ground. While the availability of nutrients above and below is likely to affect this lifeline, it’s unclear how. To find out, researchers monitored soil microbes across Chinese National Ecosystem Research Network (CERN) under two conditions with either low or high amounts of nutrient resources. Data showed that the availability of resources affected how the functional traits of organisms in each ecosystem achieved stability. In systems with low resources, stability was achieved mostly by interactions between organisms occupying the same trophic level of their food web. In contrast, systems with high resources achieved stability through microbial interactions across different trophic levels. These multi-trophic interactions ultimately helped ensure the stability of overall plant biomass..."

"Methane production by microbes holds great promise for converting industrial waste to fuel. In the wild, this process involves the well-orchestrated transfer of hydrogen between organisms that break down carbon-rich matter and those that form methane. But that harmony presents a thermodynamic puzzle, as reactions that generate high concentrations of hydrogen can and do inhibit reactions that occur only at low hydrogen concentrations. To understand how these competing processes co-exist, researchers analyzed 17 methane-producing bioreactors using metagenomics. Altogether, they assembled genomes spanning 66 phyla of microorganisms, which were divided according to the compounds they most commonly broke down, such as sugars or amino acids. The team used those findings to understand how high- and low-hydrogen reactions occur side by side and produced a model describing how organisms may employ unique strategies to drive thermodynamically competitive metabolisms..."
