This OER was made possible through the support of the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges Open Educational Resources Initiative (ASCCC OERI). This textbook was developed with the intention to support customizability and allow instructors to adopt and adapt the materials to fit their own course needs through the use of an open license and open resources. Because of this, this textbook can be transferred fully or as chapters (modules). It is meant to be used as you (the instructor) see fit. Alignment to Library Support Staff Certification (LSSC): At the beginning of each module chapter, learning objectives and LSSC competency sets are listed that the content aligns to. This is done to provide further insight into how the material can best support your course. In the appendixes, you will also find perspectives from students and professionals that can be incorporated into your classroom discussions about the profession. These insights were gathered by alumni of LSS certificate programs, advisory board members of LSS programs, and other library community members. This text was also written with the intention to not just highlight EDI efforts and priorities for libraries, but also with EDI practice in mind - meaning, we wanted to use and incorporate resources that provided a diverse range of experiences and perspectives as well. This includes checking for accessibility and usability.

In this lesson, students will  demonstrate their understanding of acceptance by developing a creative narrative that demonstrates the core theme of acceptance. The lesson includes a video clip, storyboard template, and rubric. This lesson is based on a video about the life of Carl Erskine, The Parallel book, and students’ research and perceptions of the concept.

In this lesson, students learn about their classmates and teacher in a way that builds community and cohesiveness in the learning environment. Using the books, Playing for Change by Kelly Brown and The Parallel by Carl Erskine, as well as the Special Olympics video clip, Acceptance, students will discuss differences in the characters who were accepted and those who were not. In pulling these elements out of the plot, the students will then identify differences in themselves that possibly relate to others in the classroom.

This Module highlights classroom considerations that promote access to the general education curriculum for students with disabilities (est. completion time: 1.5 hours).

This AEM session will review the meaning of accessibility, and look at why standard formats can create barriers for certain learners. In contrast, we will outline and explore the basic accessible formats. Ideally, educators would provide materials that their students can access, but when that doesn’t happen, learners need a solution. Additionally, some accessible formats may require the use of an assistive technology tool to allow the student to fully interact with the materials being presented. This session will focus on free or low-cost accessible technology tools available on a variety of devices and platforms. Having the right tool for the task can mean the difference in a student’s meaningful and successful participation in their education!

DISSENT BY DESIGN is a book that was produced during 2022-2023 in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.  It was on this date that I began a social media campaign on LinkedIn that directly addressed the invasion of a Sovereign country by a rogue super power. As a Graphic Designer I felt it was my obligation to do all I can to bring attention to this atrocity and bring the narrative to the forefront of the conversation so that we help end this conflict in all theways we can.  This book is a call to action, in the form of 'social media' posts throughout a one year period of time in our collective past, it is a documentation in chronological order of what happened, when and who was to blame and how many sufferred.   FInally, this book illustrates how Graphic Designers can use their knowledge as storytellers to forward a conversation about the most important things in our lives and how to preserve them.  We can be a vehicle of change and/or social engagement, to help people understand all the complex problems we face and to begin the process of solving those problems.  This is a way forus to bring past narratives to light once again, to rejoin the conversations that have been lost, and to further discuss and provide solutions through dialogue and change.

Students will use various math skills and standards to complete a baseball-themed lesson. The main topics of this lesson include percentages, rates, and geometry.

In this lesson, students will identify similarities and differences between themselves and a partner to help break down barriers. Students will explore the power of accepting others and connect what they learn to create an acceptance campaign.

The goal of this toolkit is to give your board a way to measure your current state and to evaluate whether the actions you have taken to create a more diverse board are actually having a positive impact. In addition to supporting you to figure out your current state, it will provide you with resources to help you plan where you might go next. This practical toolkit is designed to help you understand the change process that organizations go through when they embark on the important, but at times demanding, journey to become more inclusive and respond to the needs of their board members, staff and the communities they serve.

Despite the progress that has taken place in the sector of technology, efforts of ensuring the inclusion of persons with disabilities remain limited. This is due to the limited opportunities of capacity building, weak awareness among engineers and industrialists, and the hindering of persons with disabilities’ voices in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) policy development and decision-making.

Inspired by the disposition of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with disabilities regarding accessibility, the Global Initiative for Information and Communication Technologies have been playing a pivotal role in promoting the persons with disabilities’ right to inclusive ICTs. Benefiting from the results of its Digital Accessibility Right Evaluation Index, G3ICT has realized the increasing commitment of CRPD States Parties to issues of ICT Accessibility. Nevertheless, The DARE index data show the remaining challenges encountered by governments’ procurement capacity for offering actual support to inclusive ICT programs, products, and services. ICT accessibility continues to be absent from higher education and vocational training programs. Furthermore, advocacy efforts of persons with disabilities and their organizations remain limited within the realm of digital accessibility.

This paper discusses G3ICT’s Digital Accessibility Right Education (DARE) Academy, and its role in tackling issues of digital divide through offering a platform of educational development and advocacy capacity enhancement for persons with disabilities around issues of ICT accessibility.
