Building on concepts taught in the associated lesson, students learn about bioelectricity, electrical circuits and biology as they use deductive and analytical thinking skills in connection with an engineering education. Students interact with a rudimentary electrocardiograph circuit (made by the teacher) and examine the simplicity of the device. They get to see their own cardiac signals and test the device themselves. During the second part of the activity, a series of worksheets, students examine different EKG print-outs and look for irregularities, as is done for heart disease detection.

"Coronary heart disease is a serious condition, and its prognosis is largely determined by the degree of myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (MI/R) injury. MI/R injury occurs when blood returns to cardiac tissues and is partly a function of calcium overload and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. There is growing evidence that estrogen is protective against MI/R injury and a recent study examined the potential mechanisms of this protective effect in rats and cultured cells. Reducing estrogen levels by removing both ovaries exacerbated MI/R injury and reduced levels of SERCA2a, a critical calcium ion pump, but SERCA2a could be increased to nearly normal levels by estrogen supplementation (17β-estradiol). Both supplemental estrogen and exogenous SERCA2a overexpression decreased signs of ER stress and alleviated myocardial damage. Conversely, reducing SERCA2a expression exacerbated ER stress and myocardial damage, and adding estrogen after that reduction could not protect against the damage or ER stress..."

"A healthy heart is one that stays in shape—literally. Remodeling of the heart’s structure is both a cause and an effect of heart disease. One molecule that could help fortify the heart against harmful reshaping is STING. STING is a signaling molecule that triggers a fleet of protective chemicals during infection, but recent studies suggest STING could also play a role in heart injury. To explore this role, researchers monitored STING in mouse models of heart remodeling. Mice experiencing heart remodeling showed elevated levels of STING. To isolate the effects of STING, certain mice were genetically altered to overexpress the molecule. Compared with unmodified mice, these high-STING mice showed smaller changes in heart size and better overall heart function. Cell experiments revealed that STING could provide these protective effects by combating autophagy. Autophagy is the process of degrading and recycling parts of the cell and is the driver of heart remodeling..."

Now, by tracking the movement of calcium ions, researchers are gaining a better idea of what happens right after individual heart cells die. Calcium ions regulate vital cell functions in mammals and therefore serve as a valuable signal of cellular activity and intercell connections. When zapping and killing a single heart muscle cell with a laser, researchers found that different types of surrounding cells responded differently. Nearby myocytes showed a slow and sustained uptick in calcium “sparks,” while distant myocytes were weakly or not affected. This activity was accompanied by mechanical damage in myocytes.
