Each of these videos highlight a career that connects to green chemistry and sustainable design. In each video, the professionals share their reflections in response to a series of interview questions. The videos are five to ten minutes long. They are designed to be used with secondary students.
It includes an activity guide to support teachers with using the video series with students.

The evolution of paints has seen advancements from acrylics to smart coatings with self-healing and color-changing properties. Early developments included acrylics, water-based latex paints, polyurethane coatings, powder coatings, and nanotechnology. Breakthroughs introduced advanced smart coatings, graphene-based coatings, bioluminescent paints, and photocatalytic paints. The smart revolution brought self-healing coatings, responsive color-changing paints, anti-graffiti coatings, and hydrochromic/photochromic paints. Future applications include military use for camouflage and safety, energy efficiency, and solar paint for clean energy production.

The topic of my research in Chemistry is Preparation of Heterogenous Catalysts and their applications in various Organic reactions. This is the broad area of my research. I have identified this field of interest on which I would be spending the next 2.5 to 3 years roughly. Nanotechnology is concerned with the exploration of new nano systems in the physical, chemical and the biological world. The fascination with the nanoscale materials arose from the acquisition of new traits at nano scale, and how the changes in size and shape attribute to change in properties. By replacing traditional bulk materials with equivalent nanoparticles (NPs), we can provide environmentally acceptable and cost-effective approaches for transforming basic materials into valuable chemicals and thereby enhance and use them as active and stable heterogeneous catalysts. Through all the literature survey which I have done, I have designed a 3-stepped process for the synthesis of my heterogeneous catalyst.

The United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development outlines a plan of action for “preserving peace, people, prosperity, and our planet”. Central to that plan is the sound management of chemicals and waste, wherein reduction and renewable resources are key. Here’s where materials like cellulose play an important role. Cellulose is the most abundant natural polymer on earth, and one of the most in-demand. That’s because on top of being non-toxic and biodegradable, cellulose also tends to be lighter, cheaper, and stronger than other commercial polymers. There’s only one problem..."

EME 807 overviews a wide range of contemporary technologies in the context of sustainability and examines metrics for their assessment. The course explores the main principles that guide modern science and technology towards sustainable solutions. It covers such topics as resource management technologies, waste and wastewater treatment, renewable energy technologies, high performance buildings and transportation systems, application of informatics and feedback to sustainable systems, and more. Learning in EME 807 heavily relies on real-life examples and taps into current practices of technology analysis. This course goes beyond understanding the background, fostering critical thinking and challenging the students to draw connections between social, environmental, and economic aspects of sustainable technologies.

Students will compare the basis of the derivatives for different plastics in order to determine their expected carbon-14 content. They will then compare ratios of carbon-14 to carbon-12 in plastic samples and categorize the sample according to its percent bio-based composition. Teacher Background Information: This lesson is more of a context design to be used with an existing nuclear chemistry lesson plan. The goal is for students to see the applicability of nuclear chemistry beyond carbon-dating by showing how carbon-dating can be used to determine the carbon sources of products.  Students will need a basic understanding of the carbon cycle, and nuclear equations. The lesson will need students to learn about half-lives halfway through the lesson and that is left open to teach as you wish. There is room for extension to mass spectrometry if you want to incorporate it here for AP Chemistry or as an honors extension. I would suggest using the Flinn POGIL on Mass Spectrometry.
