This module is designed for students to learn about citizenship and civil society in the context of globalisation and China’s rise, and to develop their knowledge, skills, awareness and leadership working with Chinese society. The above aims are addressed through a series of seminars together with group discussion and interaction with experts, community leaders, practitioners or relevant stakeholders. Students will have chance to design their own projects and work with relevant stakeholders to address the needs or special issues facing Chinese communities. In regard to students’ own career objectives and competence development, the module will aim to promote a multi-cultural perspective and team-working skills

The world is becoming more and more interconnected. Globalization changes how people consume, work and live almost everywhere on the world. Today, many economic, political, cultural or ecological relationships are not explainable from a national perspective. At the same time, a controversial debate about the consequences of globalization has begun. But what are the main causes for globalization? In what areas it is most prominent? And who are the winners and looser of globalization?

Global Health Governance is how we create an organized response to health at the global level. Each country has its own health system, but health issues are become international, as people travel, and goods and services (for example tobacco sales) are becoming increasingly globalised, and challenges such as climate change have a wide reach. WHO has an important guiding role in the global health architecture, but it has limited funding and mandate to establish and implement legally binding acts.

Globalisation has been widely debated in International Political Economy. This module has the task to assess its impact on European politics and integration. First, various definitions of globalisation will be introduced, before its impact on individual European countries and the European Union as a whole is analysed. Is there a general institutional and policy convergence of states due to globalisation, or do states respond in different ways? Does globalisation leave room for alternative economic-political models? Is European integration a defensive response to globalisation or simply part and parcel of the processes of global structural change? What are the likely characteristics of the future economic-political model of the EU? These are some of the questions, which will be addressed in the module.

Prof. Andreas Bieler

Andreas Bieler is Professor of Political Economy and Co-Director of the Centre for the Study of Social and Global Justice. His general expertise is in the area of International Relations/International Political Economy theories and the analysis of European integration as well as resistance to neo-liberal globalisation with a particular emphasis on the possible role of trade unions.

The general aim of his research is to understand the current struggles over the future European Union (EU) economic-political model with a particular focus on the possibilities for resistance against the emerging neo-liberal, Anglo-American model of capitalism.
