Images can be a useful component in any subject.  This lesson will guide students through an analysis of an image.  Students will use critical thinksing skills to interpret an image. Students will then generate a hypothesis about the source and construct questions for further investigation. 

This activity is an introduction to the study of birds. Students will gain observation and classification skills.

This is a collection of 900 boldly colored and graphically diverse posters produced as part of FDR's New Deal. These striking silkscreens, lithographs, and woodcuts were created to publicize health and safety programs; cultural programs including art exhibitions, theatrical, and musical performances; travel and tourism; educational programs; and community activities.

This project is a four year initiative focused on integrating arts into the core curriculum through teacher education, practice, and coaching.

In this unit, students are asked to use the six hats analytical method to interact with both visual and written art. During the unit, students will be introduced to the six hats technique and apply the practice to art work from artist collective the Spiral Group as well as various versions of their core text. For our core text, my students will be reading Lorraine Hansberry’s 1959 play “A Raisin in the Sun.” The text is important to our unit because Hansberry is an artist who is creating works reflective of the social movements of the period of time in. Many of these social movements still resonate today.

This is a very well-produced website with material on a wide range of art-related topics. There are essays on specific artists and on more quirky topics like pop star clothing. The images on individual art historical movements are interactive, click and more information appears. There are embedded videos on certain topics. It is a relatively comprehensive and entertaining website, although the topics have to be searched for - it is not chronologically laid out as a text.

This lesson was actually created as a resource to help train on how to use the new Open Author application. There is a PDF and video that goes along with this sample lesson.

The Internet Archive was founded to build an ‘Internet library,’ with the purpose of offering permanent access for researchers, historians, and scholars to historical collections that exist in digital format. Founded in 1996 and located in the Presidio of San Francisco, the Archive has been receiving data donations from Alexa Internet and others. In late 1999, the organization started to grow to include more well-rounded collections. Now the Internet Archive includes texts, audio, moving images and software, as well as archived web pages in our collections.

Students study the three main physical properties of leaves (shape, edge/margin and venation). Students will use the elements of art to describe and classify the observable properties of leaves. They will create an interpretive work of art that responds to these properties.

With Blues, Jazz, and Soul Music as a foundational backdrop, Memphis has made many other significant contributions to music.  Artists such as Maurice White, (leader/founder of the 70s/80s supergroup Earth, Wind, and Fire), Big Star, and even the most recent Band Camino all call Memphis Home.  These artists along with others continue to push the creative envelope and discover new avenues of expression for Memphis Music.     

Blues and Soul music intersect in Memphis Tennessee.  Southern Soul as it is usually called, originated in Memphis and was greatly influenced by the blues of the city and the Mississippi Delta.  

A Look at Memphis Jazz Piano before James Williams, Donald Brown, and Mulgrew Miller made their significant contributions.  In addition to the great Phineas Newborn jr., Charles Thomas and Harold Mabern also made a tremendous impact.  Live music at local venues provided informal educational opportunities for students of all ages.   

This is a look at some of the more successful jazz pianists from Memphis Tennessee.  Each artist has experienced national and international acclaim as both a pianist and composer.  What's more, they are all comtemporaries having attended the University of Memphis (then Memphis State University)at the same time.
