This course is designed to provide an understanding of how the human brain works in health and disease, and is intended for both the Brain and Cognitive Sciences major and the non-Brain and Cognitive Sciences major. Knowledge of how the human brain works is important for all citizens, and the lessons to be learned have enormous implications for public policy makers and educators. The course will cover the regional anatomy of the brain and provide an introduction to the cellular function of neurons, synapses and neurotransmitters. Commonly used drugs that alter brain function can be understood through a knowledge of neurotransmitters. Along similar lines, common diseases that illustrate normal brain function will be discussed. Experimental animal studies that reveal how the brain works will be reviewed. Throughout the seminar we will discuss clinical cases from Dr. Byrne’s experience that illustrate brain function; in addition, articles from the scientific literature will be discussed in each class.

I know a LOT about Dyslexia-both in a personal level and a professional level. It goes UNDIAGNOSED in thousands of people across all ages. Within Corrections, the percentage of students we serve with Dyslexia is incredibly high. Recent Federal legislation has opened the door to reforms- but this emphasis hasn't taken on importance yet in the state that I reside in. I am a Microsoft Geek- that is the biggest resource that has been available for me to use in adult ed. I have a PowerPoint that explains some basic facts about Dyslexia. Plus a self-made Dyslexia Screener that I put together by combing through several online resources. The out of pocket cost for the ed psych testing my child needed to diagnose dyslexia & dyscalculia was close to $2,000. Our students most likely didn't ever have the money to pay for that, nor will they. Please do what you can to research on your own! You can find ways to help. If you need suggestions, comb through more of my resources.

The web-site uses storytelling process based entirely on the Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Not only does it make the reading process easier, but it also allows autism spectrum students to understand the fable on several levels.

One in five students in the U.S. are estimated to have learning and attention issues. Specific learning disabilities can include dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia, while attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) centers on an individual's challenge with focus. Learning and attention issues often co-occur. These brain-based differences are not the result of low intelligence, poor vision, or hearing. Although young people will not ‘grow out’ of their learning or attention challenge, the appropriate, evidence-based programs and strategies can support a learner to become successful in school, work, and life.
It is particularly important that these interventions occur early on (ideally prior to third grade) to provide students the support they need at critical periods of learning and development. While learning and attention challenges affect all learners from every income level and across all races, genders, and ethnicities, students who are Indigenous, Black, Brown, living in poverty, or learning English are more often over- or under-identified with specific learning disability diagnoses.

The website is intended to support our staff by providing a resource about dyslexia and by highlighting the good practice amongst teaching staff which our students have found helpful. One of our aims is to demonstrate that some elements of what is good practice for all work extremely well for dyslexic students and therefore staff designing teaching programmes do not necessarily have to do anything extra for dyslexic students. We have tried to produce something which would provide information and insight into dyslexia and how it can affect students and their learning rather than just a list of dos and don’ts.
