This lesson over digital citizenship is a brief overview of the elements of being a good digital citizen, ways our students can better protect themselves online, the lasting effects of a digital footprint, and finally some things that they can do to be a better digital citizen. The information was pulled from a variety of academic resources.

This website is a comprehensive set of resources for students K-12, parents and teachers. The topics include online security, digital relationships and cyberbullying, digital footprint, digital citizenship, student data, copyright and maintaining a healthy balance of digital exposure.

This activity card is meant to be a self-paced lesson showing users how their data is stored, shared and found online in order to protect themselves online.

This activity was originally developed by Intel® as part of the Intel® Learn Easy Steps program.

This project would consist of students learning that their digital footprint can be used to assess their learning, ethics and habits. Students will be analyzing social media types and incidents that have occurred with social media.  This includes social media's impact on news, research and above all personal choices and representation.  Each student will be creating a digital portfolio with a technology representation of themselves that they would want others to see them as.  This portfolio would include goal setting charts, goal planning, examples of quality work areas of education and areas of interest  that they are curious about or would like to learn from.  This portfolio would follow the students through middle school and continue to the high school level as part of their senior portfolio and graduation requirements from the Eatonville School District.  This piece is intended to demonstrate that media placed in digital format is a representation of you and your work.  Students can use this for their benefit and to be taken as a 21st century learner.

Like footprints in the sand, everything you do on the web leaves a trace.

Every time you open up your web browser or app, every search you make, every purchase you make, meal you order, every friend you have, everything you like, everyone you follow, every website you visit, app you download - basically, every time you browse the web - you leave a trace, a footprint. This data is then gathered by actors on the web who then combine it all to set up a profile of you, which is then sold to advertisers who can then target you with very specific ads of things you might want to purchase.

This resource uses the ad-model of the web as a backdrop to explain how the web works. Search results, recommendations, cookies, dark patterns... the web will hold no secrets to your students!

It will help them understand why and how data on their activity is gathered. This will help them make more informed choices in what websites and apps they decide to use.

A final section will focus on digital detox, steps students can take to reduce their digital footprint and screen time.
