This resource is a professional development template for facilitating a hybrid professional learning community for educators. Through a combination of in-person gatherings, Zoom sessions, and asynchronous activities, teachers learn about climate justice and environmental justice topics that are relevant in their communities. They learn and collaborate with their peers in the CJL and are supported to design and implement a community action project with their students. This professional learning community was designed and facilitated in partnership with Stacy Meyer and Educational Service District 112.In this template, presenters can reference an outline of the learning experience. In addition, feel free to review "Climate Justice League - Community Action Project Examples" to get a sense of the types of projects that teachers implement, or to check out "Climate Justice Gallery Walk" as a sample learning activity. We encourage you to adapt the structure and content to fit the needs of educators you support, especially by incorporating locally relevant resources and examples!

Sociology often looks at different age cohorts. A cohort is simply a group of people, but here we're looking specifically at different age groups or generations, because these people all lived through the same certain events through a certain time that affected their lives similarly.

"Lifestyle changes on both the individual and societal scale cause profound changes to the gut microbial community. Transitioning to a more Western lifestyle has been previously linked with reduced fermentative capability in the gut microbiome, as well as increasing incidence of various diseases like diabetes. To better understand these types of microbial community shifts, researchers looked at over 5000 residents of Amsterdam. They compared first- and second-generation residents from various ethnic backgrounds. The goal was to examine the directional changes in microbiomes after immigration to the Netherlands. Second-generation Moroccans and Turks as well as younger Dutch participants showed an overall shift toward less diverse and less fermentative gut microbes and an increased abundance of a cluster of microbes, here called the BBB cluster, that is associated with a Western lifestyle..."

"Going in for surgery? It’s possible the level of pain you’ll experience during recovery is encoded in your DNA. This conclusion draws from the work of an international collaboration of researchers. By looking at the outcomes of over 1000 patients, they pinpointed factors linked to ongoing postsurgical pain. They found that one important determinant is the code of a single gene – the brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, gene – opening new avenues for how we understand, and treat, chronic pain. Nearly all surgical patients experience some degree of postoperative pain, but it’s usually resolved as they heal. For many, however, it can last for months or even years – a condition referred to as chronic postsurgical pain. Although some elements that lead to this condition are known – nerve injury during surgery, for example, is one common cause – there’s often no easily identifiable culprit. Enter genetics..."

This information encodes more than just ancestry; it also captures aspects of wellbeing as well as traits or predispositions for which test quality is often poor. These private companies are strictly prohibited in France. But that hasn’t stopped French research teams from working with them, or French people from paying for illegal tests over the Internet. So how can France keep control over its own genetic data? Our solution is e-CohortE.
