Career Options for Biomedical Research

This course has been designed as a seminar to give students an understanding of how scientists with medical or scientific degrees conduct research in both hospital and academic settings. There will be interactive discussions with research clinicians and scientists about the career opportunities and research challenges in the biomedical field, which an MIT student might prepare for by obtaining an MD, PhD, or combined degrees. The seminar will be held in a case presentation format, with topics chosen from the radiological sciences, including current research in magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography and other nuclear imaging techniques, and advances in radiation therapy. With the lectures as background, we will also examine alternative and related options such as biomedical engineering, medical physics, and medical engineering. We’ll use as examples and points of comparisons the curriculum paths available through MIT’s Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering. In past years we have given very modest assignments such as readings in advance of or after a seminar, and a short term project.

Career and life planning is a lifetime process and this course is designed to equip you with the tools necessary to navigate each step of the way. This course is divided into six units to guide you through the career exploration and planning process.

Unit 1: Getting Started: Creating Your Career & Life Planning Vision:
Introduces the career exploration and planning process and highlights important success factors such as mental outlook, self-confidence and the power of positive thinking as you develop your personal vision.

Unit 2: Engaging in Self-Exploration:
Valuable career assessments will be administered and interpreted to help identify core values, personality preferences, interests, skills, abilities and character strengths.

Unit 3: Conducting Career Research:
Research techniques and tools for exploring the world of work, current job market trends, and online resources for career information will be covered.

Unit 4: Decision Making and Goal Setting:
Steps involved in the decision making process will be explored while identifying obstacles and challenges faced when making decisions. Goal Setting and educational planning tools will be introduced to help identify next steps and develop a personalized academic and skills based educational plan.

Unit 5: Developing your Self-Marketing Campaign:
The job search process, networking, resume and cover letter writing and interviewing techniques will be addressed to help create a strong marketing campaign.

Unit 6: Turning your Career and Life Planning Vision into Reality:
Creating a personal career vision statement and action plan is the focus of this unit. Staying motivated and determined to making the vision a reality.

The course is organized by three themes – Making it My Choice, A World of Options and Charting a Direction – with culminating individual and group projects. Students will define career clusters and pathways, describe examples of career readiness, utilize self-assessments to better understand interests, establish a career portfolio and create a personal learning plan to provide direction to high school and post-high school activities. This course is aligned to American School Counselor Association Standards for Students, uses Nebraska Career Connections an online career information system and integrates EducationQuest tools and resources for middle school students.Recommended Level: Grades 7-8Course Code:  320300

Middle and High School educators across Lebanon County, Pennsylvania developed lesson plans to integrate the Pennsylvania Career Education and Work Standards with the content they teach. This work was made possible through a partnership between the South Central PA Workforce Investment Board (SCPa Works) and Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU13) and was funded by a Teacher in the Workplace Grant Award from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. This lesson plan was developed by one of the talented educators who participated in this project during the 2019-2020 school year.
