Biology 213 - Video Assignment
Unrestricted Use

Rating
0.0 stars

Students research a biology topic, present their discoveries to each other for peer review, create a short video explaining the topic, and decide how to share their video publicly.

With this assignment, students will have an opportunity to dive into one of the many aspects and concepts of biology in greater depth. They will have an opportunity to choose a topic they are interested in (list of possible topics provided, adaptable for others), and research the how/why/when of the topic. They will then present their findings first in a written format (a preliminary informative essay), to serve as a guide for their video production. After discussion and peer review, they will create short videos that explain the topic to the general public. Teaching this topic in a creative way will solidify their own knowledge. They will also become familiar with many aspects of video editing, and grapple with putting their creations into the world.

Adapted from the Google for Edu Training Center Materials:When students turn in worksheets and other physical work, we try to organize it neatly in folders or drawers. We use different colors, labels, stickers, and more to easily find student work later on. Today, we can use a variety of tools to collect and organize students’ digital work too.Simplify the process of exchanging work between educators and learners by using Google Classroom and Drive. These tools can help teachers stay organized.Students can save time and energy turning in assignments in the digital classroom as well.Using Google Classroom, they can submit assignments with the click of a button.Using Drive, they can easily move documents to a folder shared with their teacher, or create a document in that folder to begin with. In this lesson, we’ll hear from a few teachers who are using Google tools to collect assignments in their classrooms.

The Literacy Design Collaborative (LDC) provides a curriculum alignment system that helps teachers deliver standards-driven assignments in which students write in response to reading in discipline-specific ways supported by backwards-designed instruction.

LDC tools and learning experiences help teachers and schools meet the challenges of: (1) increasing the rigor of assignments, lessons, and units by becoming truly standards-driven, (2) increasing teachers' knowledge and expertise around instructional planning, and (3) radically changing the expectations schools and teachers have for their students' ability to read and write with depth and breadth—in other words, to be truly college and career ready.

The LDC CoreTools platform includes: (1) a free Curriculum Library that includes nationally-validated tasks and instructional plans that can be modified to meet any teacher's needs; (2) template-driven task and instructional plan editing tools that can be used collaboratively; (3) student-work rubrics and a curriculum-alignment rubric; (4) free professional learning experiences; (5) premium professional learning experiences, resources, and analytics.

The syllabus used for the University College Groningen course Biopsychology in Spring 2021. This syllabus outlines the general lesson plan for the course, but focuses most heavily on the main assessment method used in the course: the Signature project. For this project, students worked together in small teams to create an interdisciplinary webpage on a Biopsychology topic. These resulting research-based, peer-reviewed webpages cover a range of topics, and contain active learning assignments for others to use. The webpages were tied together to create another open educational resource, found related to this syllabus.

The syllabus outlines in detail how the project was created and graded, and can be used as inspiration for others to create their own active learning assignment which results in the creation of open educational resource.
