This activity involves plotting and comparing monthly data on atmospheric C02 concentrations over two years, as recorded in Mauna Loa and the South Pole, and postulating reasons for differences in their seasonal patterns. Longer-term data is then examined for both sites to see if seasonal variations from one site to the other carry over into longer term trends.
Early Learning in Math and Science (ELMS) is a model curriculum designed …
Early Learning in Math and Science (ELMS) is a model curriculum designed for use by college instructors to prepare pre-service early childhood educators to teach science and math to young children. The course was developed with funding from the National Science Foundation through collaboration between UC Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science and Los Medanos Community College. The development of the course was an iterative process, through which students and instructors at pilot sites provided ongoing feedback and evaluation data used to refine the instructional materials. These materials are detailed, flexible, and well tested and designed so that even instructors unfamiliar with teaching a science and math curriculum course can inspire, excite, and actively engage their students. Although the curriculum is structured in a particular way, each instructor can adapt, pick, and choose from the variety of ideas presented to fit their own format and time frame.
In this activity, students explore the role of combustion in the carbon …
In this activity, students explore the role of combustion in the carbon cycle. They learn that carbon flows among reservoirs on Earth through processes such as respiration, photosynthesis, combustion, and decomposition, and that combustion of fossil fuels is causing an imbalance. This activity is one in a series of 9 activities.

In this short, hands-on activity, students build simple molecular models of 4 atmospheric gases (O2, N2, C02, and methane), compare their resonant frequencies, and make the connection between resonant frequency and the gas's ability to absorb infrared radiation.
