"Bariatric surgeries like gastric bypass are often used for weight loss, but they can also help protect patients from fatal heart attacks, possibly by altering the levels of gut-derived metabolic hormones like GLP-1, leptin, ghrelin, and insulin, which are known to affect heart tissue, or by acting on heart tissue directly. Researchers recently investigated the mechanisms by performing three common bariatric surgeries on non-obese, non-diabetic rats. Ten weeks later, the researchers subjected the rats to simulated heart attacks by restricting and reestablishing their cardiac blood flow. Both Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy, but not ileal transposition surgery, reduced the size of the damaged area in the heart and the no-reflow area to which blood flow couldn’t be restored. Gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy also increased GLP-1 and leptin levels, while sleeve gastrectomy reduced ghrelin levels. In contrast, none of the surgeries affected insulin levels..."

Students are introduced to archaeology vocab through the case of "Barwick's Ordinary," a historic tavern, gathering place, home, and center of business in 1700s Maryland. Students are briefly introduced to the story of the ordinary then explore a 3D "art gallery" with scans of artifacts from the site as well as maps, surveys, and drone photographs. Internet access is currently required. Paintings by John Lewis Krimmel help illustrate how things may have looked. An extension is to conduct some more detailed reading into the role of ordinaries, a ubiquituous feature of the European colonies in America. There are 3 activities to "meet" Barwick's, followed by 2 summative activities.

This free online textbook (e-book in webspeak) is a one semester course in basic analysis. This book started its life as my lecture notes for Math 444 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in the fall semester of 2009, and was later enhanced to teach Math 521 at University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison). A prerequisite for the course is a basic proof course. It should be possible to use the book for both a basic course for students who do not necessarily wish to go to graduate school, but also as a first semester of a more advanced course that also covers topics such as metric spaces.

Basophils are derived from the same stem cell line as mast cells and while they are similar to mast cells, they are not identical (they are thought by some to be immature mast cells). Deputy U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves was a highly respected and wildly successful peace officer in Indian Territory for over thirty years, starting when he was first commissioned by federal Judge Isaac Parker in 1875. His life saw the enormous transformations that swept through the country during the Civil War, the days of the “wild west” in the federal territories, and the final settling of the frontier. The exploits of Deputy Marshal Reeves as he fought and captured hundreds of outlaws made him famous in his own time. This lesson tells the story of Reeves, his world, and his relentless pursuit of justice. The Woodson Center's Black History and Excellence curriculum is based on the Woodson Principles and tells the stories of Black Americans whose tenacity and resilience enabled them to overcome adversity and make invaluable contributions to our country.
