After studying the basics of enzyme function, students will be exposed to the history and evolution of lactose intolerance/lactase persistence. Both whole group and individual activities will ask students to interact with the concept. They will conduct a lab to understand the role of enzymes in lactose digestion and communicate their knowledge by creating a public health poster.

Being able to ask important questions and discover their answers through critical thinking and utilization of available data and information are important and useful skills in health education, science education, and in life. This lesson begins that process with a focus on health topics, particularly substance use/misuse/abuse and mental health, however, the science and engineering practices identified in this lesson transcend into other science disciplines. This lesson focuses on the development of important questions and then analyzing/locating sources of information to help answer those questions.

The Oregon Department of Education released this online and offline lesson adaptation, as a part of the Distance Learning for All Erin's Law Toolkit for Districts. The lesson is an Advocates for Youth Rights, Respect, Responsibility (3Rs) Fifth Grade lesson entitled Sexual and Reproductive Anatomy. The full lesson has been adapted by Mulnomah County Health Department to be more trauma-informed, more trans-inclusive, and to prompt more discussion about race and racism. This lesson focuses on the core sexuality education topics: Anatomy, Bullying and Abuse Prevention, Consent, and Boundaries, which are foundational to child abuse prevention education. 3Rs Original Authors: Elizabeth Schroeder EdD MSW, Eva Goldfarb PhD, Nora Gelperin MEd

This lesson begins a sequence of twelve lessons intended to be taught over the course of a student’s high school career, focusing on substance use, misuse, and abuse as well as mental health. This particular lesson challenges students to identify the internal and external influences that impact their health behaviors. Particular attention is paid to substance use, misuse, and abuse as well as mental health, however, influences on health are related to all topic areas.

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:
"Early-onset knee osteoarthritis is commonly observed after ACL reconstruction, and may be attributable to residual abnormal joint mechanics following surgery. Graft tunnel placement is a surgical factor that may affect internal knee joint mechanics, and thereby joint health. In this study, researchers from the University of Wisconsin used a combination of MRI and computational modeling to assess the consequences of graft placement on the loading of cartilage in the knee. The findings, reported in the _American Journal of Sports Medicine_, highlight the aspects of graft placement that surgeons should most closely consider to restore normal mechanics during ACL reconstruction. MRI measurements were performed to assess the ACL tunnel location and graft angle in the knees of 18 participants who had undergone ACL reconstruction. A clinical laxity test was performed on each subject following the completion of post-surgery physical therapy..."

"Infection of the knee joint following ACL reconstruction is a rare but serious complication. Past studies have attempted to uncover the risk factors that make certain individuals more susceptible to infection than others. But many of these studies have been limited to small and medium-sized cohorts. A new study reported in the _American Journal of Sports Medicine_ has examined the largest, single-center cohort to date. Findings reveal that graft type, age, and revision surgery could be linked to the risk of infection following ACL reconstruction. The researchers behind the study reviewed more than 11,000 total procedures performed at a single institution between 2010 and 2018. Among these, 48 infections were identified. In addition to infections, the researchers reviewed patient and procedure characteristics associated with infection, infection characteristics, incidence of ACL graft retention and factors associated with retention versus removal of ACL grafts..."

This lesson introduces the Bone Module Grand Challenge question. Students are asked to write their initial responses to the question alone. They will then brainstorm ideas with one other student. Finally, the ideas are shared with the class and recorded. It is important for students to gather information to decide whether or not this condition is hereditary. Students then watch two videos about osteoporosis. Grand Challenge Question: When you get home from school, your mother grabs you, and you rush to the hospital. Your grandmother fell and was rushed to the emergency room. The doctor tells your family your grandmother has a fractured hip, and he is referring her to an orthopedic specialist. The orthopedic doctor decides to perform a DEXA scan. The result showed her bone mineral density (BMD) was -3.3. What would be a probable diagnosis to her condition? What are some possible causes of her condition? Should her family be worried that this condition is hereditary, and if so, what are possible prevented measures they could take to prevent this from happening to them? What statistical method did you use to determine if the condition is hereditary?

"For scientists and other academics hoping to translate their findings into political change, policy experts offer the following advice: Tell a good story. Unfortunately, the academic literature—researchers’ go-to source for evidence that things actually work the way people claim they do—says little on how to go about crafting a compelling narrative. For that, says media expert Brett Davidson, researchers must delve into a lesser known but no less copious store of useful know-how: the grey literature. In a recent paper, Davidson outlines how this overlooked body of work provides researchers a manual for landing on the political agenda. A catch-all term for any research or materials not controlled by commercial publishers, the grey literature is a compendium of lessons learned through trial and error. Long a survival guide for policy advocates and activists working in the non-profit world, now, Davidson argues, it’s time for researchers to take advantage, too..."
