This is a concept attainment on the words: affect and effect. These words are easily confused because they are similiar. This teaching strategy has six steps for students to learn about the two words with activities that is facilitated by the teacher. At the end of the lesson, students should be able to learn the difference between affect and effect.

This contemplative practice inquires into the complex web of interdependencies linking global climate change, the War on Terror, Afghan poppy production, opiate addiction, and food security through the lens of systems theory. The exercise challenges students to consider these linkages not only conceptually but also somatically and emotionally.

Using video clips from The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross, this collection of lesson plans addresses a wide range of themes of the African-American experience from 1500 to the present.

These questions are intended to be discussed in small groups in the classroom. They consider the definition and impact of the African Diaspora as well as its similarities and differences in relation to other diasporas. 

This activity will allow students to explore some aspects of the political, economic, social, and cultural developments of major African empires from around 1500-1800 CE. It contains information about Songhai, Kongo, Asante, the Swahili Coast, and Ethiopia. 

Learn to distinguish between exponential and logistic growth of populations, identify carrying capacity, differentiate density-dependent and density-independent limiting factors, apply population models to data sets and determine carrying capacity from population data. Make predictions on graphs and interpret graphical data to analyze factors that influence population growth.

The purpose of this lesson is to get students writing summaries that are concise.  They take a short story in a group of four and write 25-word abstracts that they then share.  As a group, they devise their own abstract, which is then shared with the rest of the class.  These are rated and students discuss which ones were better and why.

In this activity about light and perception, learners discover how a flash of light can create a lingering image called an "afterimage" on the retina of the eye. Learners will be surprised when they continue to see an image of a bright object after staring at it and looking away. Use this activity to introduce learners to principles of optics and perception as well as to explain why the full moon often appears larger when it is on the horizon than when it is overhead. This lesson guide also includes a few extensions like how to take "afterimage photographs."

All biological cells require the transport of materials across the plasma membrane into and out of the cell. By infusing cubes of agar with a pH indicator, and then soaking the treated cubes in vinegar, you can model how diffusion occurs in cells. Then, by observing cubes of different sizes, you can discover why larger cells might need extra help to transport materials.

In this four-day lesson, students will learn the importance of aging whitetail deer, demonstrate the aging process, and complete a lab activity in which assesses their deer aging ability.
