In this lesson we explore how bullying can affect us all, even when it’s not happening directly to us we might feel confused, scared, and uncomfortable. We read a book called Beautifully Me about a young girl who is confused about the ways people are talking about bodies- specifically large, or fat bodies. We talk about how feelings and emotions can be signals to us, sometimes they’re letting us know something in our world doesn't make sense and we might need help figuring it out. The lesson ends by thinking of the people/adults at home and school that they can go to for help.

Empirical Study of Data Sharing by Authors Publishing in PLoS Journals

Background Many journals now require authors share their data with other investigators, either by depositing the data in a public repository or making it freely available upon request. These policies are explicit, but remain largely untested. We sought to determine how well authors comply with such policies by requesting data from authors who had published in one of two journals with clear data sharing policies. Methods and Findings We requested data from ten investigators who had published in either PLoS Medicine or PLoS Clinical Trials. All responses were carefully documented. In the event that we were refused data, we reminded authors of the journal's data sharing guidelines. If we did not receive a response to our initial request, a second request was made. Following the ten requests for raw data, three investigators did not respond, four authors responded and refused to share their data, two email addresses were no longer valid, and one author requested further details. A reminder of PLoS's explicit requirement that authors share data did not change the reply from the four authors who initially refused. Only one author sent an original data set. Conclusions We received only one of ten raw data sets requested. This suggests that journal policies requiring data sharing do not lead to authors making their data sets available to independent investigators.

This multidisciplinary seminar addresses fundamental issues in global health faced by community-based healthcare programs in developing countries. Students will broadly explore topics with expert lecturers and guided readings. Topics will be further illuminated with case studies from healthcare programs in urban centers of Zambia. Multidisciplinary teams will be formed to develop feasible solutions to specific health challenges posed in the case studies and encouraged to pursue their ideas beyond the seminar. Possible global health topics include community-based AIDS/HIV management, maternity care, health diagnostics, and information technology in patient management and tracking. Students follow the steps of the engineering design process (EDP) while learning about assistive devices and biomedical engineering. They first go through a design-build-test activity to learn the steps of the cyclical engineering design process. Then, during the three main activities (7 x 55 minutes each) student teams are given a fictional client statement and follow the EDP steps to design products an off-road wheelchair, a portable wheelchair ramp, and an automatic floor sweeper computer program. Students brainstorm ideas, identify suitable materials and demonstrate different methods of representing solutions to their design problems scale drawings or programming descriptions, and simple models or classroom prototypes.

Now, scientists are using these versatile packets of vibrating energy for a new application: growing functional, transplantable blood vessels right on the benchtop. These engineered tissues can be used to repair injuries caused by diminished blood flow from blood clots or other blockages. But there’s a lot to consider when fabricating therapeutic blood vessels. There are biological and mechanical attributes that are tricky to get right. The body’s vasculature is complex and multiscale, and a precise geometric arrangement is needed for efficient perfusion. Vessels are also composed of multiple cell types, which need to be well integrated to function. More specifically, they design a prototype device to help a young girl who has a medical condition that restricts the motion of her joints. Her wish is to eat her favorite food, pizza, without getting her nose wet. Students learn about arthrogryposis and how it affects the human body as they act as engineers to find a solution to this open-ended design challenge and build a working prototype. This project works even better if you arrange for a client in your own community.

"NTRK, ROS1, and ALK gene fusions are recognised oncodrivers in many cancers. Oncogenic fusions result in constitutively active tyrosine kinases and downstream activation of pathways associated with tumour growth, survival, and proliferation. NTRK fusions, for example, are found in both adult and paediatric cancers and are extremely common in some rare cancers. All three fusion types are found in non–small cell lung cancer. At diagnosis, many patients with NTRK-fusion-positive solid tumours, including NTRK-positive non–small cell lung cancer, or with ROS1-positive non–small cell lung cancer also have brain metastases. These metastases are linked to a worse prognosis. Although effective drugs exist for both NTRK-positive solid tumours and ROS1-positive non–small cell lung cancer, most don’t penetrate the CNS well enough to treat brain metastases. Entrectinib, an orally active small-molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitor that selectively inhibits TRK, ROS1 and ALK, acts in both the periphery and the CNS..."
